leave the city and dnve into the
mountains or to the seashore.
There's something everybody
can and should do to help us
breathe cleaner, fresher air. Find
out how by writing to. The Na-
tional Air Pollution Control Ad

Horo in Hondo
Mrs. E. W. Brucks and
Mrs. J. W. McDade spent
Sunday in Laredo with their
brother and sister-in-law,
the John A. Grays.
Hondo must find a way to
adequately dispose of excess
effluent from its sewage treat-
ment plant.
City Councilmen learned
of the problem last week
from Albert Rowlett, sewer
and water department super-
intendent.
Rowlett presented a rough
draft of disposal facilities at
the city's plant in southeast
Hondo, off the Yancey Road.
The west riant is presently
inactive. ^ a
Considered'adequate for
the needs of a population of
10,000, the system functions
properly except for the d 1 s -
posal of excess water.
Rowlett said that the ci-
ty's present metered water u-
sage averages 700,000'g a 1 -
Ions daily. Of this total, an
#Jri mated 350,000 gallons
moves to the disposal plant.
A tentative agreement
with some property owners in
that area is not dependable.
Excess water is not used reg-
ularly and must escape down-
stream.
Rowlett said the city was
making every effort to solve
the problem before It gave
rise to complaints.
Rowlett had visited cities
with similar problems and re-
ported their solutions in de-
tail. Many cidei own sur-
rounding Bermuda grass land
irrigated with treated efflu-
ent and use the product for
stock feed. Fredericksburg,
he said, was averaging a pro-
fit of $50 per acre from the
sale of baled hay.
Councilmen realized the
urgent need to solve the prol>-
lem, and will meet for more
thorough discussion and ac-
tion.
