County to study
brush invasion
A new organization has
been formed to provide funds
for increased research on
range improvement and brush
invasion of pasture lands,one
of the state's major agricul-
tural problems, according to
County Agent Glenn Bragg.
The organization, called
the Brush Control and Range
Improvement Foundation,
hopes to obtain one cent per
acre from each cooperating
landowner each year for Five
years. Money collected will
permit more basic research
and education on brush con-
trol.
v Each county will have its
own committee to workonthe
program. The Medina Coun-
ty Agricultural Agent and two
Medina County ranchers, Rob-
ert Faseler of Hondo and Law-
rence Rothe of D'Hanis will
go to Alice this Friday to re-
ceive instructions for organia-
ing a county committee.
Faseler will represent Medina
County Farm Bureau, Rothe
is chairman of the Medina
County Livestock subcommit-
tee of the program building
committee.
Foundation funds will sup-
port basic experiments and
field trials on the various
methods of control. Follow-
up studies will cover range
improvement. All such act-
ivities will supplement Inten-
sive studies already underway
In announcing the founda-
tion's formation., Bragg said
that nearly 82 percent of the
Texas range has been invad-
ed by brush. That reduces
animal carrying capacity by
half or mare, he said. Brush
also affects the prosperity of
many Texas communities
that depend On agricultural
income.
Bragg said that the pfo-
gram already has the enthusi-
astic support of the Texas and
Southwestern Cattle Raisers
Association, Texas Sheep and
Goat Raisers Association,
Texas Farm Bureau and the
Texas Farmers Union.
