RADIOSURGERY

Antonio CyberKnife®, there are
two other machines in Texas, in
Austin and at Baylor University
Research. There are about 20 in
the entire country, but that num-
ber is expected to double soon.
Taking a moment to recount
some of the many blessings their
family has witnessed. Sue said
“people have been so thought-
ful.” Neighbors and friends
have helped out in many ways.
Their family has grown closer.
“We’ve been through this
with God at our side every step
of the way,” said Sue, crediting
prayer groups in churches and
towns across the country for
holding them up. “We take one
day at a time... and we’ve
learned to laugh a lot more.”

What is CyberKnife® Radiosurgery?
The CyberKnife® Radiosur-
gery System is a non-invasive,
100% frameless image-guided
radiosurgery that can ablate tu-
mors and other lesions any-
where in the body without open
surgery. The system treats in
single or staged sessions, and
monitors internal reference
points in the anatomy (skeletal
landmarks or small implanted
markers) to correct for patient
movement. It delivers multiple
beams of precisely directed ra-
diation that converge upon the
tumor while minimizing injury
to surrounding healthy tissue.
Multiple beams of high energy
radiation are delivered from
multiple points outside of the
body and converge precisely at
the tumor or lesion inside the
body. Each individual beam is
not sufficient to cause harm, but
the convergence of all the
beams at the tumor results in the
lesions receiving a very high
dose of radiation.
CyberKnife® Radiosurgery is,
so precise, radiation beams can
be sculptured to small complex-
shaped tumors near critical
structures, such as hearing and
vision nerves. This ability to ac-
curately irradiate only the tumor
and protect healthy tissue allows
the machine to treat many le-
sions which may be considered
inoperable or untreatable with
other radiosurgery systems.
The unique technology,
which was developed in coop-
eration with Stanford Univer-
sity, was cleared by the FDA in
August 2001 and received CE
approval in September 2002 to
provide radiosurgery for lesions
anywhere in the body when ra-
\
diation treatment is indicated.
- The CyberKnife® is a new
way of performing stereotactic
radiosurgery, combining two ad-
vanced technologies:
The first is a lightweight de-
livery system mounted on a
multi-jointed robotic arm, which
provides unparalleled access to
tumors anywhere in the body
and allows more flexible deliv-
ery of radiation for optimum
treatment.
The second is an image guid-
ance system which allows the sys-
tem to locate the tumor through-
out treatment and correct tor small
patient movements, which allows
radiation to be delivered without
the use of stereotactic frame.
The CyberKnife® machine
came to San Antonio in Octo-
ber 2004 at the Methodist Can-
cer Center. They treat cranial,
spinal, lung, pelvic and soft tis-
sue. In April 2005, they started
treatment of the pancreas also.

CyberKnife® Society, a coalition
of physicians and affiliated
healthcare professionals special-
izing in CyberKnife® radiosur-
gery, visit the website at

PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW
Thank you to everyone who has offered prayers of healing
and thankfulness, and for the cards which touched our
hearts. Arlen has now received the new Cyberknife Radia-
tion Therapy which is getting wonderful results. He is get-
ting stronger and feeling better every day, although he will
be getting more chemo, just to make sure nothing is hiding.
God has blessed us with loving, supportive children and
their families who have been wonderful; also three of our
neighbors, the doctors and the Cyberknife team. May God
bless each one of you.

The Office of Rural Community
Affairs (ORCA) has notified
County Judge Jim Barden that
Medina County is in line to re-
ceive a grant of $250,000 for on-
site sewage facility replacement in
the communities of Twin Lakes/
Rest Area and Lytle ranch in the
southwestern part of the county.
These funds are from the
Community Development
Block Grant Program of the
United States Department of
Housing and Urban Develop-
ment. In Texas the program is
administered by ORCA through
the Texas Community Develop-
ment Program.
“This quarter million will
help us solve a pressing sanita- .
tion problem in some areas that
have a great need,” said Judge
Barden. “I’m hopeful that with
the full cooperation of the local
residents in these areas work on
replacing and building the indi-
vidual septic systems can begin
