CONTESTANTS RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS
1. Registration will begin at IOiOO A.M.,
2.
Contestants must use cook area assigned to them by the site
committee.
INGREDIENTS: Meat is limited to those meats generally con-
sumed by the general public. Exotic meats are not desired and
if used must be approved by the chili committee. Seasoning
may be used as desired. Five pounds of meat must be used and
may be weighed by the committee.
Chili must be entirely prepared at the cook site. Precooked
meats will not be used.
All items needed to cook must be supplied by
and ONE, 12 oz
the contestant.
Cup of Chili to
Each team will donate ONE qt
be judged and auctioned.
Entry fee is $10.00 for each contestant or team ( up to 5
members.)
When the contestant registers a 12 oz. cup and, 1 qt. container
will be issued. Inside the cup is a coin envelope containing
a number which matches the number in the coin envelope taped
on the side of the cup. Take the envelope containing the number
from inside the cup, and retain it. This number must be
presented to the announcer when the winning contestants are
announced. Contestants failing to present this number if and
when announced will be automaticaly disqualified. Do Not
open or remove the envelope from the side of the cup.
All contestants will be required to bring both the one quart
and 12 oZ. cup filled with Chili to the registration booth
before 5=00 P.M. The 12 ox. cup is the sample used fo'r
judging and the one quart container will be auctioned or
sold.
The 12 oz. samples will be kept warm by the chili committee.
Any contestant failing to meet the 5:00 P.M. deadline will ,
be disqualified.
10. The judging will be in accordance with the Sanctioned Cook-
Off judging rule3 of the Frank X. Talbert Super and Secret
, Judging System, as given out by the Goat Gap Gazette.
11. Judging will be based on all of the following criteria*:
1. AROMA
2. COLOR
3. TASTE
4. CONSISTENCY
Entertainment galore will make
things more pleasant Saturday dur-
ing the Medina County Agriculture
Fair in Hondo City Park.
Owl Band
The Hondo High School Owl Band,
under the direction of new director
Johnny Martinez, will perform at
about 12 noon. They will present a
number of songs in approximately 30
minutes.
Tony Koch
Tony Koch, a native of D’Hanis,
provides good Country and Western
sounds for area dances with his
Country Squires aggregation. Satur-
day, however, he will be picking and
singing with his wife Melanie, Cindy
Zerr and Mary Klaeger. They will
put forth some good music at both
the chili cookoff area and the main
area in Park No. 1.

Konnie Mason
Ronnie Mason, who for several
years covered the airways as a disc
jockey over KRME, is a song writer
and recording artist in his own right.
Ronnie has been pulling them in as a
solo entertainer at the Who Knows
i/ounge in Kirby for more than six
years now. He will perform at both
the main stage area and the chili
cookoff area.
Elaine McKechney
Elaine, who manages the Sundown
Saloon in Hondo, has been singing
“all her life" she says. She did a little
professional singing back in Houston
some years ago and since being here
has joined several area bands to do a
few songs.

49th Armored Band
The 49th Armored Band is station-
ed at Camp Mabry in Austin as part
of the Texas National Guard. It’s 44
members will present a concert titled
“Legacy, Music from Texas History,”
a 45 minute presentation from 1:30 to
2:15 p.m.

Robert "Duck” Harrison
Hondo High School graduate who
"picks and sings every once in a
while" as he terms it. He will be
joining Ronnie Mason in his two
The beautiful sounds of the
Spanish culture are provided by this
group of Hondo residents. They
include Henry Escamilla, Ernest
Rangel, Reyes Escamilla, Manual
Cortinaz, Ernest Escamilla, Augie
Rodriguez and Albert Herrera. The
group has played throughout the
area, with one performance being to
entertain members of the South
Texas Press Association in their
50th Anniversary convention.
