Meetings
Council studies installation
of self-service fuel tank
for Castroville Airport
By William Hoover
Akvs. HblaltCo
Castroville Municipal Airport Co-
ordinator Tun Fousse told council on
Monday night be had received three
informal proposals for a 12,000-gal-
lon above ground aviation fuel tank,
complete with a credit card reader
which could be operated around the
clock. Fousse said the proposals were
for virtually identical tank systems
and ranged from $52,000 to $69,000.
The city has been trying to replace
their aging underground tanks for
over a year.
“We are asking for permission to
obtain the specifications so we can
come back with bids at the meeting
on July 1 and get this ball rolling,”
said Fousse. “Double Check Inc. sent
the lowest proposal and they have a
tank in stock ready for immediate
shipment"
A 20-by-28-foot concrete slab for
the tank will cost between $2,600 and
$3,000 if the city uses local contrac-
tors. according to Fousse
Councilman James Bell asked how
much it would cost to clean the tanks,
which are subject to monthly ins pec
tion by the Texas Natural Resources
Conservation Commission
Public Works Director Bruce
Alexander said it would be prudent for
council to budget $10,000 for the un-
derground tank removal and hope the ,
project only costs $5,000. “Royce Groff
offered us the use of a sump pump to
remove the 40 gallons that remain in
the tank when it's empty,” said Fousse
“Our monthly TNRCC inspections
have all been clean But, once they are
emptied, the clock starts ticking to re-
move them from the ground according
to TNRCC guidelines "
Councilman Dave Stuart made the
motion to authorize Fousse to seek
bids. The motion passed unanimously
after receiving a second from coun-
cilman Jerald Foxworthy.

It’s becoming all too common.
Your neighbors are suddenly getting
bills from places they have never
been. Your relatives are denied credit
or quit receiving their monthly credit
card or bank statements. Collection
agencies begin trying to collect debts
that do not belong to you.
It’s called identity theft and its is
fast becoming one of the most preva-
lent and costly financial crimes in the
country, affecting as many as 750,000
new victims each year and costing
consumers, merchants and financial
institutions billions of dollars.
Carelessness while doing business
over the internet can mean that your
Social Security number, credit card or
PIN numbers can be "borrowed” and
used to establish credit for others us-
ing your identity to run up big bills or
set up phony bank accounts that can
ruin your good name and credit.
But, the internet isn’t the only
place to exercise caution. Some
thieves steal these vital numbers
from your mailbox or by lurking
over your shoulder while you use
your ATM.
The Independent Bankers Asso-
ciation of Texas (IBAT) is working
with its 40,000 banker members
across the state to stop this menace.
But, they need your help
IBAT and its members ask that you
take the following steps to protect
yourself against Identity Theft:
• Never carry your Social Security
number in your wallet or print it on
your checks.
• Check your credit card statements
carefully each month and immedi-
ately report unauthorized purchases.
• Shred all credit card receipts and
solicitations, cancelled checks and
financial documents before throwing
them away.
• Never provide any personal,
bank account or credit card informa-
tion to anyone who contacts you
through a telephone solicitation. In-
sist that they mail you information.
• Never write down PIN numbers
and passwords-memorize them and
do not use any part of your Social
Security number, mother's maiden
name, your birth date or address.
• Never leave your purse or wallet
in the car, even if they are hidden.
Identity Theft continues to grow.
Join in the IBAT campaign to curb this
menace by taking personal responsi-
bility to secure your own privacy.
