County's unemployment rate at lowest in over a decade
LIVINGSTON — Polk County
has racked up its lowest average un-
employment rate in over a decade,
with unemployment in 2000 aver-
aging S.3 percent, according to sta-
tistics released in January by the
Texas Workforce Commission
(TWC). In 1999, the county's un-
employment rate averaged 5.7 per-
cent and in 1998 the average was
6.1 percent.
During the last month of 2000,
the county's unemployment rate hit
4.4 percent, the lowest monthly
rate recoded in at least 11 years.
December's rate further lowering an
annual avenge that was already on
its way to record lows.
In 2000, an average of 796 Polk
Countians were looking for work,
out of an estimated labor force

December's statewide unemploy-
ment rate was 3.7 percent, the low-
est monthly *Ne since Januwy.
1974, according to the TWC.
"December's unemployment rale
was the third consecutive monthly
reduction," said TWC Chair Diane
Rath, “reflecting Texas' strong job
growth."
Nonagricukural employment
grew by 31,400 jobs this month,
the third-highest increase during the
year.
"Led by a monthly gain of 700
jobs in electronic equipment manu-
facturing, durable goods manufac-
turing added 2,200 jobs in Decem-
ber,- said Commissioner Represent-
ing Labor T.P. O'Mahoney.
"The wholesale trade industry
grew by 2,800 jobs in December,"
said Commissioner Representing
Employers Ron Lehman,
"representing a solid annual job
growth rate of 3.5 percent.
The lowest unemployment rate
among the Metropolitan Statistical
Areas (MSAs) in December was 1.3
percent in Biyan-College Station.
Austin-San Marcos was next at 1.6
percent, followed by 1.8 percent in
Lubbock. Amarillo and San Angelo
tied for fourth at 2.4 percent.
The highest unemployment rate
was 12.1 percent in McAllen-
Edinburg-Mission, followed by 7.1
percent in Brownsville-Harlingen,
6.7 percent in Beaumont-Port Ar-
thur, 6.6 percent in El Paso and 5.6
percent in Laredo.
"Along with the low 3.7 percent
unemployment rate, more than
256,000 jobs were added in the last
year for a strong 2.8 percent job
growth rate," Rath said.
