Why you have a high heating bill,
and what you can do about it
It’s cold and gas prices
have skyrocketed.
Our region, indeed, the country,
is experiencing one of the coldest
winters we’ve seen in years. As a
result, people are using a lot more
fuel to heat their homes and
businesses. On top of that, the price
of natural gas has soared duiing
the past year.
Reliant Energy/Entex doesn’t own
the natural gas supplies we rely on
to deliver gas to you. While we buy
gas in large quantities, the price
of natural gas has more than
quadrupled in the last year alone.
As we mentioned, this winter is
turning out to be a brutally cold
season, 80% colder than last year,
to be specific, so your furnace is
running much longer.
The following tips may help
you save money.
• Enroll in the Reliant Energy/Entex Average
Billing program.This averages out your
monthly bills so that you pay about the
same amount each month, enabling you
to budget and plan.
• If someone is at your house all day and you ,
need to run your furnace, set your thermostat
lower. In an average home, setting your
thermostat back from 75° to 70* could save
you about $75 per heating season.
• If no one is home during the day, set your
thermostat to 60 degrees. Turn your furnace
on when you get home. Sure, you may be a
little chilly for awhile, but you will save money.
• Purchase a programmable thermostat, available
at most home improvement stores. These are
inexpensive and easy to install. Many stores will
offer to install them for you. A programmable
thermostat can pay for itself within one year.
• Change out your heating system's air filters
every month. This could save you up to 10%
of your heating cost!
• tyake sure that the air ducts in your houae
are property sealed.
• Check and improve the caulking and
weather-stripping around windows and doors
to reduce heat loss.
• Make sure your home is properly insulated.
• Homeowners should have a qualified HVAC
contractor check the furnace to ensure that it
is operating properly and safely.
V/ .
If you’re a typical customer, the
combination of increased fuel prices
and greater gas consumption in this
much colder weather may mean that
your February bill could be triple
what it was last year. However, if
*
you act now and practice some of the
tips we’ve outlined in this ad, they
will have a significant impact on
the cost of your future bills.
We understand some of you are having-
trouble paying your Reliant Energy/
Entex bill. If so, give us a call. And
please bear with us; you may have
to wait, as we are receiving an
unprecedented number of calls
due to the weather and fuel costs.
Together, well weather Old Man
Winter and ride
out the current
natural gas
price hike. ElltCX
