Q. I know someone who is
over 66 and nearly blind. I
believe he’s eligible for SSI.
Does it matter whether he
applies on the basis of age or
disability?
A. People who qualify under
more than one category can get
payment under the category
which is more advantageous to
them. An aged person who is
also disabled or blind may get a
higher payment as a disabled or
blind recipient because of the
additional income exclusions
allowed to these categories.
Q. Four years ago I suffered
a disabling injury. I haven't
worked since then because my
condition hasn’t improved. But
now I need more income, so I’m
thinking of getting some kind of
job. If I go to work, will my
Social Security disability bene-
fits stop?
A. Not immediately. People
who return to work before
there has been a significant
medical improvement in their
condition can be eligible for
what is known as a trial work
period. The trial work period,
which lasts at least 9 months,
and longer under certain cir-
cumstances tests their ability
to work. If they show they are
able to work, they are paid
benefits for 3 additional months
after the end of the trial work
period. But if their attempt to
work is unseccessful and they
are still disabled, their benefits
will continue without interrup-
tion.
Farm Drop
In the last 50 years, the farm
population has dropped from 25
percent of the total population to
just 3 percent.
