Many factors can affect your
endurance when cycling--be it
your physical condition, the
meal you had that morning, or
how much sleep you got the
wight before. But in a controlled
study of 12 world-class cyclists,
results show that liquid carbo-
hydrate solutions given during
prolonged moderate-intensity
exercise is an excellent way to
postpone fatigue.
In this type of exercise,
fatigue is caused when the
muscle’s store of glycogen is
depleted, according to authors
Dr. Ted L. Edwards and David
Santeusanio, MS, of Austin,
Texas and Keith B. Wheeler,
PhD, Columbus, Ohio. Glyco-
gen is a carbohydrate formed
from the simple sugar glucose
and is stored in the liver and
muscles. And it is the addition
of glucose during prolonged
exercise that slows the loss of
muscle glycogen and signifi
cantly increases indurance, ac-
cording to their article in the
March issue of Texas Medicine.
The authors tested three
drinks: plain water, a solution
of water and a special glucose;
and water, a special glucose,
and fructuse, a sugar made
from fruit. The cyclists per-
formed three 55 mile time-
trials performed on a 9.2 mile
course. The cyclists were chos-
en at random to drink a
different solution during each
of the three 55.2-mile bicycle
rides.
The authors found that cy
clists who werh given either the
glucose or the glucose and
fructose solution finished the
time-trials anywhere from 2.13
to 2.54 minutes faster than the
group that had plain water.
This is a significant time differ-
ence in competitive cycling. In
addition, their overall fatigue
was significantly less. The solu
tion containing both sugars
proved the most effective in
battling fatigue because it was
absorbed by the stomach as
quickly as water. This delays
dehydration, or the body's loss
of water. Dehydration can con
tribute significantly to a cy
clist's fatigue.

tion, the autnors write that
both carbohydrate supplements
specifically improved perfor-
mance during the last 30 min-
utes of this 2 Vi hour event.
Helping to confirm this finding,
the authors cite other studies
that suggest maintaining glyco-
gen in the muscle may have its
most obvious effect at the end
of prolonged exercise. They
add that maintaining glycogea
with carbohydrates also may
delay weakness and headache
accompanied by low blood
sugar, or hypoglicemia.
Four More Of
Texas Most Wonted
Fugitives Arrested
AUSTIN-Governor Mark
White announced today that
four more Texas Most Wanted
fugitives have been arrested
during the past month.
A total of 22 fugitives out of
the 68 who have been featured
on Texas Most Wanted are now
in custody, the governor said.
Clarence Marvin King, 46,
was arrested April 20 in Indian-
apolis, Indiana, by the Indiana
State Police, following a tip to
the Tarrant County Crime
Stoppers program. King was
wanted for aggravated sexual
assault in Tarrant County in
connection with the molestation
of an eight year-old Arlington,
Texas, girl. An arrest warrant
had been issued for King in
October, 1985, after he failed a
polygraph exam.
John DeWayne Christie, 33,
was arrested April 19 following
a traffic stop in Centerville,
Michigan. Christie was wanted
for aggravated sexual assault,
burglary, assault and escape
out of Hopkins County, Texas.
The rape charge stems from a
September, 1985, attack on a
14 year old girl at her resi-
dence in Sulpher Springs.
Christie also allegedly tried to
attack the girl's mother. He
was originally arrested in Nov
ember. 1985, at a Rockwall,
Texas, truck stop, but managed
to escape from the Hopkins
County jail on January 30.
Russel Edward Turner, 33,
turned himself in to authorities
in Houston on April 14. Turner
was wanted for murder in
Jefferson County. The murder
charged stemmed from the
September 21, 1984, stabbing
death of Jewel Savoy, Jr., in
Port Arthur. Authorities also
wanted to question Turner
about*the July, 1985, disap-
pearance of his eight-year-old
daugher Angie Marie Turner.
Austin Morrell Robbins, 52,
turned himself in to Sgt. Leo-
nard Schilling of the Fort
Worth Crime Stoppers pro-
gram on March 19. Robbins was
wanted on Warrants out of
Young County charging him
with delivery of amphetamine,
possession of marijuana and
two counts of bribery of a
public servant. He had been a
fugitive since February, 1985.
Ironically, James Dwight
Pinson, who was to have been
placed on the Texas Most
Wanted list this week, was
arrested last week in San
Francisco, California. Pinson,
38, was wanted for aggravated
robbery in Tarrant County.
Detectives say he was a suspect
in almost 50 robberies in the
Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Texas Most Wanted is a
cooperative effort between the
Department of Public Safety
and Texas Crime Stoppers. The
program is designed to enlist
the public's help in locating
fugitives who are wanted for
serious crimes committed in
Texas.
