Civics Students
Compete At
Stephen F. Austin
Last Wednesday, April 30, a
group of students journeyed to
Stephen F. Austin University
to take a test covering areas of
Civics, current events, and
both American and World His-
tory. Test time was 9:00 that
morning, so a sleepy group
crammed into Mr. James Mel-
drum’s Mazda at 6:30 during
the wee hours of the morning.
These four students were Rob-
ert Stanton, Maurine Denson,
Karen Turner, and Randy
Walker. Arriving at the Uni-
versity Center a few minutes
before test time, the group
went in and found themselves
seated before a stack of papers.
Trying to look intelligent be-
came a major problem to the
four as they faced the 28 page
test. The instructions were giv-
en and the test began amid
dropped pencils, sliding desks,
erasing, and fluttering pages.
The test was given the follow-
ing two hours after which there
was an hour break. This break
preceded a luncheon during
which the results of the test
were announced. During the
luncheon, some test questions
were discussed and all the stu-
dents from each school sur
veyed each other. During a
brief ceremony, it was an-
nounced that the winner of the
3-AAA division was Mount
Pleasant, who had the highest
team score. It had been a long
day and Mr. Meldrum and his
group traveled back to Silsbee
to await the coming of a
chance for Silsbee to return
next year, perhaps better pre-
pared.

team and the drill squad a
great deal of moral support.

joys swimming, baking in the
sun in her back yard, and horse
back riding.
When Cindy graduates from
school, she plans to further her
education by attendance at
Tyler Junior College, majoring
