Trinity Valley Trivia
By DON HENDRIX
You just had to be there
Judy Canaova was dear to my
heart.
She was a delightful performer
who came into our home via radio
once a week back in the forties with
a combination sit-com and musical
show centered around the hillbilly
gal whom she portrayed with
amiable wit and charisma. I didn’t
know what she looked like, but that
didn’t matter. That’s the way it was
with radio.
That was in the Golden Age of
radio, the 1930’s and 1940’s. (I only
remember the forties). Judy had a
beautiful singing voice, as I recall,
and her song with which she ended
every show is imprinted on my mind
forever:
“Go to sleepy, little baby,
“Go to sleepy, little baby.
“And when you wake,
“We’ll pattie, pattie cake,
“And ride a pretty little pony.”
It may sound corny without the
music, but — well, you had to be
there.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I
believe one of the characters on that
show was a Mexican type named Si
(pronounced ‘sigh”), who, played by
Mel Blanc, had a running joke that
was repeated every single week that
had to do with his name and the
Council to open
police car bids
ONALASKA - The Onalaska City
Council will consider action on the
three bids received for police cars at
its regular meeting at 7 p.m. Tues-
day.
Council will also consider action
on a franchise with Waste Manage-
ment Company, formerly Action
Container Company.
There will be a public forum, in
addition to items from the council
and a report from the mayor.
Other items on the agenda include
approval of the minutes, vouchers
and financial report.
Spanish word “si” (yes).
How’d they get away with that in
those days, using the same worn
jokes week after week and still get-
ting laughs? You’d never get away
with it today on television, but for
some reason we looked forward to
those familiar gags. There was Fib-
ber McGee’s closet, Jack Benny’s
money vault and the “Psttt” guy on
the street (also played by Mel
Blanc), Dagwood Bumstead’s colli-
sion with the mailman, Fibber
McGee’s henpecked neighbor with
•his “bird book” and his “big fat
wife.”
These allusions, I know, fall on
deaf ears to a lot of readers, but to
others, they tap a valuable
motherlode of nostalgia.
It was with the influence of those
radio days that, as a very young kid,
I dreamed of my fpture. I tried to be
a comedian. With a tree stump as a
stage, I tried to entertain my young
friends with my halarious wit. I was
quickly convinced to try something
else.
I then became intrigued with
sound effects, and decided I was go-
ing to be a radio sound effects man.
How could I know that before I could
even finish high school, the need for
such people would virtually disap-
pear along with radio’s Golden Age?
Back to Judy Canova. Recently,
one of the Houston TV stations aired
a series of old Judy Canova movies
made in the forties, none of which I’d
ever seen. I looked forward to these,
and when the first one began, I sat
down to enjoy this wonderfully
talented woman again after many
years.
Alas, as I watched, there came a
terrible realization. Most of the
fascination had been in the
nostalgia, the childhood memories.
Yes, she was personable, and yes,
she had a fine singing voice, but she
was not beleivable in her roles, and
it was further hampered by the silly
scripts of the B-movies she starred
in, certainly no reflection of her own
talent.
But what was most evident, as I
watched these old movies, was that
her wonderful brashness that had at-

tracted me had stood out only in the
context of her times. Her refreshing
honesty, with no attempt at being
“glamourous,” was bold for the for-
ties, but is commonplace for the
nineties. She was ahead of her times,
but now the times have caught up
with her so that the character she
portrayed is no longer unique.
It happens to the best of pioneers.
By being copied, they no longer
stand out in the crowd, and are
forgotten.
REQUEST FOR INFO - I would
like to get in touch with any descen-
dants of Dr. M.J. and Mattie (Leg-
gett) Taylor. Dr. Taylor practiced at
Camden or Leggett in the early part
of the century, and they had a
daughter Darcus Taylor who mar-
ried a Dr. Cunningham, who was an
orthodontist who practiced in
Houston and reportedly retired on
Lake Conroe. I’m told that the Cunn-
inghams are recently deceased, but
I’ve found no one who knows
anything of their children.

Mr. Baruch was a philosopher
as well as a financier. During his
long life, he developed rules to
guide his conduct He was a
prime example of following his
own beliefs.
Blaming others for our own
mistakes can all too easily be-
come a habit. On the other hand,
when we are successful, it is
pointless toexpectplaudits from
others; they're too busy with their
own affairs. The satisfaction of
knowing that we have done our
best is sufficient
When tragedy strikes, call us

responsibility of the many re-
quirements, both legal and reli-
