Idle
Explorations
by Wendi Jackson
Could someone PLEASE do
something about this beautiful
weather?
It is supposed to be about
time-in most of the country,
anyway--for cooler weather,
rainy days and light sweaters in
the mornings. Instead, we have
brilliant 6lue skies, days that
aren't too hot or too cool and
nice breezes.
I know that doesn’t sound
like anything to complain
about. Indeed, I join most
people in hanging around win-
dows to drink in the season's
beauty and sigh because I have
to work indoors. I, too, enjoy
the cloudless days that look
more like March than late
October.
And I, too, run straight from
the window to the tissue box
and sneeze until my heads feels
like it’s going to blow right off
my neck.
Face it, we in Southeast
Texas are not built to stand
much good weather. We just
haven't been conditioned to it.
You can’t go anywhere now
without hearing sneezes, snif-
fles, honks and coughs by the
dozens.
It’s gotten so prevalent in the
office that tissues are hoarded
jealously. Over-the-counter
sinus, hayfever and allergy
medicines are traded like stock
market commodities in the vain
hope that something, anything,
will work.
I’ve had to blow my nose so
much in the last week that I had
a dream about it. I was in a
restroom somewhere blowing
my nose while cleaning ladies
waited impatiently outside for
me to leave so they could get
their cleaning done and go
home. I remember trying to
persuade them to wait a few
seconds longer while I frantical-
ly attempted to reach a fairly
free-breathing state again.
It's a shame that during one
of the few times of year that we
can stand to be outside around
here, being outside makes us
sick. Or makes us wish we were
truly sick with the flu or
something so we could stay at
home and suffer rather than
dragging ourselves to work
because sick doesn’t count
without a fever.
Anyway, the next time you
see me and I sound like a little
kid that needs to be offered a
Kleenex, take pity on me and
don’t judge me too harshly.
And give me the Kleenex
anyway. My box is nearly
empty.
Kountze Library To
Sponsor Haunted Hall
Creatures of the night will
scare up funds Saturday for the
Kountze Public library at a
Haunted Hall in the old Ameri-
can Legion Hall.
The Haunted Hall will be
open from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Admission will be charged and
discount coupons are available
at the library and from many
Kountze merchants. The old
American Legion Hall is located
behind the library, or about
two blocks west of Highway 69
near the middle of Kountze.
“The Haunted Hall is not
recommended for pre-schoolers
unless they are very brave,”
librarian Connie H. Richardson
said. “There are many planned
activities for the young children
for Halloween, and we are
planning the Haunted Hall so
the older kids will have their
own Halloween activity."
All proceeds will go to the
