Brides Should Apply For
New Social Security Card
New brides, along with any
one else who has had a recent
name change, should contact
the nearest Social Security
office to arrange to have their
names changed on Social
Security records and to apply
for a new Social Security card
showing their new name, a
Social Security manager said
recently.
Unless the bride plans to use
her maiden name after
marriage, the record should be
changed so that earnings are
correctly reported to the cor-
rect record. There is no charge
for this service.
Evidence showing the per-
son's identity under both the
new and old names must be
submitted. Possible evidence
includes: marriage records,
drivers license, State identity
card, voter’s registration,
marriage record, divorce
decree, work badge or building
pass, passport, court order for
name change, welfare case
record, insurance policy, or any
other document showing iden-
tification data such as a physi-
cal description, photograph, or
signature.
Only original documents or
copies certified by the issuing
agency are acceptable, the
manager said. Uncertified
photocopies are not acceptable.
It takes about 2 weeks to get
the new card after acceptable
evidence has been submitted.
Underwater Research
A new remotely operated un-
derwater vehicle developed at
UCSD’s Scripps Institution of
Oceanography will greatly extend
the ability of scientists to per-
form research in the deep ocean
and on the sea floor.
Capable of working to depths
of approximately 20,000 feet
(6,000 meters), the Remote Under-
water Manipular (RUM) will do
more work at greater ocean depths
than any other research vehicle.

Sometimes it's a piggy bank
with someone's life savings.
Other times it's a big corporate
deposit. And often, just a sim-
ple question. But it's always
about money. Whatever it is,
Billie is glad to talk to you about
it. In fact, that's what she's sup-
posed to do.
If you have a little money, or
a little question, see Billie. She
certainly doesn't mind standing
around talking about it.

70% Of Poisonings
Involve Small Children
Of the more than 1 million
poisonings reported across the
country each year, about 70
percent involve children under
5 years old,
Tragically, parents contri-
bute to many of these incidents
by neglecting to put poisonous
household products and medi-
cines out of the sight and reach
of youngsters.
The Texas Medical Associ-
ation warns that poisonings can
involve everyting from soaps,
detergents, and certain plants
to cologne, vitamins and aspi-
rin.
Severe poisonings can result
from toilet bowl cleaners, auto
battery acid, swimming pool
chemicals, drain cleaners, dish-
washer soaps, industrial.
strength cleaners, furniture!
polish, charcoal lighter fluid, i
gasoline and pesticides.
TMA’s Committee on Emer-
gency Medical Services and
Trauma says the best treat
ment is prevention and offers
these tips:
- Do not store household pro-
ducts under the sink.
Lock all medicines. Pour out
of date medicines into the toilet
and flush.
Never transfer a cleaning
fluid, solvent, or other poison
ous substance into an unmark-
ed container.
-Keep insecticides, paint, tur
pentine, gasoline, charcoal
lighter fluid, and furniture
polish in locked areas.
-Do not leave medicine, per
sonal-care products, or cleaners
in open areas or window sills.
-Always turn on a light when
giving medications.
- Ask for and use household
substances that are in child
resistant packaging, and re
secure safet features after use.
--Children should be educated
about poisonous substances.
Parents should know the
number for the poison control
in their area. The statewide
poison hotline number is 1 409
