Texas 65 Health
Insurance To Be
Open In April
Texas citizens 65 years of
age and over will have nn op-
portunity to again purchase
Texas G5 Health Insurance dur-
ing the last two weeks of April
according to an announcement
by II. Lewis Rietz president of
the Texas G5 Health Insurance
Association.
Texas G5 was organized by
19G3 by G4 of the leading insur-
ance companies in the state to
offer low cost health coverage
to senior citizens of Texas who
had previously been unable to
purchase health insurance be
cause of age or physical condi-
tion. The program is available only
during open enrollment periods
to any Texas resident G5 years
of ago and over regardelss of
physical condition and without
the necessity of completing a
lengthy medical questionnaire.
Husbands and wives of those
past 65 who purchase the insur-
ance may also qualify for Texas
G5 though they have not attain-
ed the age of 65. Coverage may
also be purchased by sons and
daughters in behalf of parents
or relatives without the necess-
ity of the insured's signature.
"That Texas 65 is filling the
need we hoped it would is evi-
denced by the fact that over $4
million dollars has been paid in
claims by the Texas 65 Health
Insurance Association since the
program was started on Novem-
ber 1 1963 Rietz stated.

Rietz explained that the
unique health insurancee pro-
gram offers three plans of
coverage for the senior citizen.
The basic plan pays a maxi-
mum of $12 per day for a hos-
pital room up to 31 days part
of the costs of doctor's hospital
visits surgical fees up to $200
and miscellaneous charges up to
$125. Monthly premiums for
this plan are $9.
The major medical plan costs
$10 per month and covers hos-
pital expenses up to $5000 dur-
ing any calender year or about
80 per cent of all hospital sur-
gical and nursing home expen-
ses after the first $75. This
plan is designed for those who
have some basic coverage such
as the basic Texas 65 plan or
who are financially able to meet
the costs of basic coverage.
The third Texas G5 plan is a
combination of both the basic
and major medical plans and
"osts $19 per month.
The basic or major medical
plan may be purchased sep-
arately or in combination under
plan three.
Texas was the fourth state
in the nation to offer a G5
health insurance program for
its senior citizens. There are
now seven such plans in opera-
lion in the United States.
Texas G5 will be available
April 15 to May 1 from any in-
surance agent licensed to sell
health insurance in Texas.

Answers To
Questions On
Income Tax
This column of questions and
answers on federal tax mat-
ters is provided by the U. S.
Internal Revenue Service and
is published as a public service
to taxpayers. The column ans-
wers questions most frequent-
ly asked by taxpayers.
Q Between summer camp
and part-time jobs our 16-year
old son earned close to $1000
last year. This money is being
put aside for college. My ques-
tion is this: can we still claim
him as a dependant?
A As long as you provided
more than one-half of his sup
port you can claim your son as
a dependant. Money put aside
for college is not an item of
support until the year it is
spent.
Q Last year I cashed in a
bunch of U. S. Savings Bonds
to make a down payment on a
house. How do I figure the in-
terest on these bonds for in-
come tax purposes?
A Subtract the amount you
paid for the bonds the issue
price from the amount you
received when you turned
them in. The difference is the
interest you must report on
your return assuming you had
not reported it as it was accru-
ing. QAre there any cases where
it would pay a married couple
to file separate returns?
A In Texas a community
property state there is gener-
ally no difference in tax un-
less there aro capital losses in
excess of $1000 or both spou-
ses are over 65 and entitled to
the retirement income credit.
In those cases separate returns
may result in a smaller tax.
Prepare your return early so
that you can take the time to
figure out what your taxes will
be by using a joint return and
separate returns. If you .wait
too long you may forget to do
this.
Q I worked for three com-
panies last year. Can I get a re-
fund on the Social Security tax
that oach of them withheld?
A If the total amount with-
held by all employers was over
S174.00 because of your hold-
ing down more than one job
anything over that amount can
be credited against your in-
come tax liability.
On your tax return Form
1040 you enter excess Social
Security tax withheld. This
excess can be used to reduce
your balance due if there is
one or added to your refund.
Q Is it true that I have to file
a return to get a refund? I am
a high school student and earn-
ed less than $500 last year.
The store where I worked
withheld income taxes from
my paycheck.
A Yes that's right. File your
voturn and attach the W-2
form vour employer sends you.
The card form 1040A will most
likolv suit your purposes.
O I drive a cab and some of
mv income comes from the tips
T receive fron customers. I
know fat tins are taxable.
What kipd of records should
I keep of this money for tax
purposes?
A One of the best records is
a daily dairy of amounts re-
vived. For such a diary each
tin need not be listed just the
amount received during the
day.
Q I have a dependency ques
tion. My three brothers and I
sunDort our mother who is a
widow. Since our contributions
are about equal none of us
provides more than one-half
support. Can each of us take a
induction for our actual con
tribution to her?
A. You can't. However the
four of you can decide to let
one claim the $600 exemption
this year and another the next
year and so forth. When this
is done the person who takes
the exemption must have con-
tributed over 10 percent of the
support and the others who
contributed over that amount
must sign a declaration that
they will not claim the exemp-
tion for that year. These de-
clarations must be filed with
the return of tho one claiming
the exemption.
Q My company is sending
me on an extended field trip
tho first part of April Can
I file my return when" I gfet
back oven though it might be
after April 15?
A Extensions may be grant-
ed by Internal Revenue offices
if the reasons given are sub-
stantial. As there are several
weeks between now and the
first of April it might be ad-
visable for you to file your re-
turn before you leave.
Requests for extensions
should be made on Form 2688
or in a letter. You have to sup-
ply information on whether
you have filed timely returns
for the past three years and
whether you are up-to-date on
payments of estimated tax as
well as listing your reasons for
requesting the extension.
Under the new law individ-
uals mny now receive up to $100
in dividends of a taxable domes-
tic corporation before they be-
come taxable. The previous lim-
it was $50. For married couples
whore both have dividends
pach mav receive up to $100 in
qualified dividends tax-free.
Q Has there been anv
change in the dividend credit
provision?
A Yes. The dividend credit
is reduced from 4 percent to 2
precent for 1964 and to zero for
1965. The dividend credit pro-
vision allows a taxpayer to de-
duct a percentage of his divi-
dend income from his tax li-
ability. For 1964 taxpayers may
claim a credit against their tax
of 2 percent of the amount of
qualifying dividends they recei-
ve over the exclusion with cer-
tain limitations.
Q Before I retired last
year my boss told me to look
into the special benefits for
those over 65 in the new tax
law. What are they?
A There are several spe-
cific benefits in addition to the
lower rates that will cut tax
bills for all taxpayers. For the
taxpayer 65 or over the 1964
law provides:
1 - an extra $100 on the mim-
imum standard deduction
2 removal of the one per-
cent floor on the deduction of
medicine and drug expenses
3 - tax free treatment i n

sale of a home foe. $20000 or
