BUDDY’S WORKSHOP
Lead In Household
Drinking Water
I was informed I am probably drinking lead because I have copper
water lines. How can that be? Is there some way to test how much lead
is in the water? How do I solve the problem if there is too much lead?
You may have a problem and you may not. Since you do have
copper water lines, the chances are very good that all the joints were
soldered with a type of solder that is fifty percent lead. If the joints
were soldered neatly and no more solder than necessary was used,
you probably won’t have any problems. If, on the other hand, the
joints have solder dripping from them or covering the fittings, the
lead from the solder can be inside the pipe, where water will pick it up
as ittravelstoan outlet.
You can have your water tested to see if it contains more lead than
is considered safe by the Environmental Protection Agency. If the
water tests high (over 20 parts per billion) you have several options.
You can replace all the fittings using lead-free solder, you can replace
the fittings with plastic ones manufactured just for this purpose, or
you can use bottled water for all your cooking and drinking needs.

large enough to lay out an I8;x27’deck. In addition, the kit provides
detailed instructions for building an enjoyable, well-crafted home
addition. After completing the design, the DIYcr or contractor can
simply take the plan to his Mellco dealer to purchase the necessary
lumber and accessories. The Design-A-Deck Kit is available freest

Keep Your Cool
As this is written, fifty-five
record-high temperatures were
broken across the United States.
90-plus temperatures are the rule
rather than the exception. While
watching both local and national
news, I noticed something pe-
culiar—and somewhat alarming.
Approximately five minutes
of the newscasts were devoted to
the effect heat has on animals and
livestock; about thirty seconds
were devoted to how people in
general, and elderly people in
particular, try to cope with the
heat and humidity.
Heat can do as much, if not
more damage to the body than
odd. Anyone can suffer from the
effects of hot weather. A well-
known basketball player was
severely dehydrated after play-
ing 48 minutes in 83 degree tem-
perature. Note that we are talking
about superior-conditioned ath-
letes—monitored closely by doc-
tors and trainers—who never-
theless fell victim to the above-
normal temperatures. You can
imagine how someone forty or
fifty years older, possibly on
medication that could aggravate
the problem, can have troubles
coping with heat.
The bottom line is this: keep
yourself cool at all costs. If it is
not absolutely necessary to leave
Air-conditioning, don’t do it.
Avoid any strenuous activities,
and keep yourself filled with
plenty of liquids (anything ex-
cept alcohol) to help your body’s
natural cooling process keep up.
Many times during the sweltering
summer months, it goes a long
time between rains, and as a result
air pollution gets worse and worse.
This translates into breathing
difficulties, so again stay near
air-conditioning whenever pos-
sible.
Fire Detectors
Federal officials estimate that
30 percent of all households tack
any form of smoke and fire de-
tectors. Thirty to 50 percent of
the detectors in place don’t work.
