adults are in better control of
their destiny if they properly
prepare themselves, according
to a gerontology specialist with
the Texas Agricultural Exten-

“Learning to cope with
emotional, social and financial
situations is very important to
the happiness of older adults,"
said Dr. Judith Warren. “En-
hancing independence in older
adults is one of the goals of the

Speaking during the state

AIDS Mutation
The latest information com-
piled by a unique computer data-
base confirms that the AIDS virus
continue to mutate, making reli-
able detection of the disease a
formidable challenge.
Separate antibody tests may
be needed in the future to detect
the two known types of AIDS
viruses. Moreover, more than
one vaccine may have to be de-
veloped.
The mutation rate of the AIDS
viruses is approximately 1 to 1.5
percent per year per virus—mil-
lions of times faster than that of
typical human DNA.
