Members and Guests of the Texas Surgical Society:
It was with a great deal of pride and disbelief that I found myself
elected to the presidency of this society last year, and I am still
extremely proud of this. Walter B. King, while escorting me to the
podium, assured me that my fall would soon come with the presidential
address; and, as the months wore on, I came more and more to believe
this. Actually, during the years of being treasurer, I was aware that
becoming president sometime might befall me, so I did think about the
address off and on during that time. However, I remember that
Dr. C. B. Carter, and others, had been treasurer of the Society for
12 or 15 years; and, consequently, the title of this still caused
consternation. Just as Walter B. was the one to remind me of the
coming talk, so it was that Alvin Shelton gave me the subject. He
came up to me that afternoon last fall and told me that he had looked
over the records of the Society, and that while there had been father
and son combinations in the presidency before, there never had been
two brothers.
The thought of nepotism came forward immediately, because guess who was
president the year that I was elected to the Society... None other than
my brother, Dr. Robert Sewell. We have followed surprisingly parallel
paths through our schooling and practice, and I must admit that it was
really not so much a parallel path as me following in the footsteps of
a teacher. The situation was very much like a little kid who decided to
hide in the back seat of the car when his brother was taking a girl out
on a date. Big brother went and picked the girl up at her house, and
they drove around for a while; then they parked out in a little quiet
place. Big brother turned to the girl next to him and says, "Well honey,
you want to make out or walk?" The girl opened the door and said, "I'll
walk," and she took off down the road. Well, big brother sat there for
a few minutes, and then pretty soon he turned the car around and wentJ
