and he saw little Suzie. So, he went up to Suzie in the little red
wagon and said, "Suzie, want to take a ride in my little red wagon?",
and she said, "Sure!" She got in, and he pulled her around the block
a little ways, and stopped. He went around to her, and he says, "Well
Suzie, you want to make out, or you want to walk?" Little Suzie's eyes
brightened up, and she says, "I'll make out!" With that, the little kid
went home yelling, "Hey brother, what do I do now?" While Bob has been
the known premier joke teller in this Society for a number of years, in
our family, the acknowledged teller of jokes, the top banana of us all,
is my mother, Edna. She tells old stories with such enthusiasm that
even though you have heard them before, they still come out fresh and
humerus. She makes old tales seem like new. She told me some of the
earliest jokes that I ever heard, and some of the earliest slightly off-
color ones that I ever heard.
Last fall,whenl started thinking about this talk, I wondered whether
Edna was going to make it through another year. When your subject is
86 years old, you really have some doubts sometimes. Leading the life
of a doctor, and the mother of two others, she has a great aversion to
being examined. So, consequently, we decided to take her to a Dallas
Cowboy football game. She has been an avid follower of the Cowboys for
many years. We took her on a bus over to the game. They had one of their
patented come-from-behind finishes, and won by about three points; and
when we got back on the bus to go home,. I decided that if she could
survive that, we didn't have to worry about doing a lot of x-rays and
EKG's. Edna doesn't know it, but her epitaph has already been written
by one of her blonde-headed little grandchildren who once saw her driving
by his house. He stopped his playing to look at her, and said, "There
goes Nanny Sewell, she is a good old girl."
However, I have wondered from the subject of nepotism. If all the men
in this room who have close relatives, fathers, sons, etc., maybe even
