TENNIS: CLEBURNE 15J0SHUA4
Surprise player makes tennis debut with win
BY BRIAN PORTER
josh uastar@thestargroup. com
It took some persuasion
from a couple of sources, but
Allyson Johnson finally gave
in.
She showed up Tuesday
morning at the Joshua High
School Tennis Center and
by the afternoon she was a
member of the team. It paid
dividends, too, as she helped
the team to a girls doubles
match victory in a 15-4 loss to
Cleburne.
“I came to practice and
volunteered to play,” John-
son said. “Golf is my main
sport.”
Nealie Sanchez won
consecutive home doubles
matches as she paired with
Johnson in line-two girls’
doubles. The pairing picked
up an 8-6 victory.
Johnson’s arrival was in
part at the insistence of San-
chez, and with some encour-
agement from coach Mike
McElroy.
“This is the first time we
played together. It was good,”
Sanchez said. “Our commu-
nication was like, We got
this.’”
It marked the first oppor-
tunity Johnson had received
to play doubles with a female
partner. She was part of the
team last season, but played
mixed doubles until she tran-
sitioned solely to singles.
Her first outing of the sea-
son was quite impressive. Af-
ter picking up the win in dou-
bles, Johnson lost her singles
match in a tiebreaker.
It was a match she be-
lieved she should have won.
Johnson drew a 7-2 advan-
tage and needed just one
game to close out the pro-
set match. But her opponent
rallied to tie the match and
Johnson lost, 7-2, in the tie-
breaker.
“It was really hot and I
thought I was going to die
of dehydration,” Johnson
said. “It was the first time I
had played in three months.
I kept my attitude up, even
though it was tough.”
Andrew Butler picked
up a key singles victory for
the boys squad, positioning
himself as an contender for
the district top boys singles
seed. But, Joshua was unable
to pick up any other boys
FOOTBALL: SEVENTH, EIGHTH GRADE
Burl. Hughes 24,
Loflin 8th ‘A’ 6
Loflin Middle School’s
eighth grade ‘A’ team got a
late defensive score last week
at home to prevent a shutout
against Burleson Hughes in a
24-6 loss.
Loflin (0-3) forced the
quarterback to fumble and
recovered the ball in the end
zone in the fourth quarter.
“Defense came up big in
the fourth quarter,” coach
Jeremy Gillmore said. “De-
spite the outcome, the kids
are playing tougher than last
season and are showing im-
provement.”
The team was excited to
play the “school down the
road,” Gillmore said.
“We fell behind early to
a very good and talented
Hughes team,” Gillmore said.
“Our team fought hard but
was unable to ever catch up.
Offensively, we had some
bright moments.”
Burl. Hughes 38,
Loflin 8th ‘B’ 6
Loflin Middle School’s
eighth grade ‘B’ team didn’t
get started well at home and
it resulted in a 38-6 loss last
week to Burleson Hughes.
Loflin (0-3) allowed
Hughes to score a touchdown
on its first offensive play of
the game.
“This was a game we
singles victory. Rudy Zuniga,
Taylor Brooks and Wesley
Brown may have shown im-
provement in their matches,
each falling 8-5.
Sarah Losch gave the
team a sweep of the top sin-
gles matches when she won,
8-0. The next four girls sin-
gles players were only able
to take a game each off their
opponents and Johnson nar-
rowly lost her singles match.
Cleburne drew a 5-2 ad-
vantage after doubles play,
although Brooks and Michael
King won in the line-three
boys match, 9-7, and the
pairing of Johnson and San-
chez won in girls play.

run with 3:50 left in the first
quarter evened the score at
6-6.
Hughes scored on runs
of 8 and 23 yards in the sec-
ond quarter and again on
a 4-yard run in the fourth
quarter.
“We had a disappointing
loss,” coach Ryan Campbell
said. “Special teams and
defense played better than
the score shows, but some
unfortunate turnovers on
offense proved to be the dif-
ference.”
Burl. Hughes 8,
Loflin 7th ‘B’ 0
Loflin Middle School’s
seventh grade ‘B’ team just
need a bit more time on the
road last week.
It was challenging deep
inside Burleson Hughes’ ter-
ritory last week when time
expired, sending the team to
an 8-0 defeat.
Loflin (1-2) fell behind
early on an 8-yard touch-
down run with 5:07 left in the
first quarter. The successful
conversion put Hughes up,
8-0, and in position to defend
the margin for the victory.
“The offense struggled
early on against a good
Hughes defense,” coach Ryan
Campbell said. “We played
better in the fourth quarter,
successfully picking up first
downs, only to watch time
run out inside the Hughes
20-yard line on the last drive
of the night.”
Loflin 7th ‘C’ 14,
Burl. Hughes 0
Loflin Middle School’s
seventh grade ‘C’team scored
a touchdown in each half last
week on the road as it defeat-
ed Burleson Hughes, 14-0.
Loflin (2-1) scored with
2:07 left in the first quarter
on a 8-yard run followed by
a successful conversion. The
team came back to score on a
12-yard run with 20 seconds
left in the third quarter.
“We continue to run the
ball very effectively while
playing smashmouth de-
fense,” coach Ryan Campbell
said.

the first trek through the
district schedule take place
Lriday. Joshua travels to
Granbury at 5:30 p.m. and
could be in position for at
least a share of the final
playoff berth from the dis-
trict with a victory.
In their four district
losses, Joshua has been un-
able to take a game from
its opponents. Three of the
four losses have been to
neighboring Burleson, Cle-
burne and Crowley, teams
Hanick says the squad
wanted to beat.
“We may feel like we
played bad (against Cle-
burne),” Hanick said. “I be-
lieve that when we look at
the film of this game that
we’ll realize we played like
we should have.”
There were certainly op-
portunities for Tuesday’s
match to have turned out
differently.

Cleburne opened Game
1 with an early advantage
before Joshua used a 7-3
run to take an 11-9 lead.
Maddison Moad used a pair
of kills to expand the lead
to 15-11. Two kills by Calie
Payne and another by Moad
expanded the lead to 22-
17 and put Joshua on the
verge of sealing the Game
1 victory, but Cleburne re-
sponded with an 8-0 run to
close the game.
Morgan Howard re-
corded and ace and Ashley
Brakel had a kill to force
ties early in Game 2. Josh-
ua was leading 9-8, when
Cleburne went on an 8-3
scoring run with Brakel
and Hannah Nelson scor-
ing two of the three Joshua
points on kills. The service
of Howard closed the mar-
gin to 17-13, but again the
game closed on an 8-1 Cle-
burne scoring run.
A Moad kill and How-
ard’s second ace were key
moments that lead to a 6-4
lead early in Game 3. Aback-
and-forth game dominated
early by sideouts seemed
headed in Joshua’s direc-
tion when Hannah Shaw
recorded a pair of blocks
for a two-point swing, but
slowly Cleburne pulled out
a three- and then four-
point lead. It then went on
a four-point run for a 22-15
advantage. A Cassidy Riza
kill gave Joshua a chance to
rally, but Cleburne was able
to pull out the victory.
“I felt we didn’t think
it all out the whole time,”
Hanick said.
In junior varsity action,
Cleburne defeated Joshua,
25-21, 27-29, 25-17.
In last Lriday’s action,
Seguin defeated the var-
sity, 25-18, 25-18, 25-17.
But a victory Lriday over
Granbury (19-14, 5-1) could
put Joshua into a share of
fourth place and pull it to
within two matches of ev-
eryone outside of unbeaten
Burleson.
