BASEBALL
Owls drop to 2-2 in 7-4A play
BY RICKY MOORE
mooresports@thestargroup. com
Leading Mansfield Sum-
mit 3-0 Tuesday night,
things fell apart for Joshua’s
baseball team in the top of
the seventh.
Summit scored four runs,
including the go-ahead run
on a bases-loaded hit bats-
man, as the Jaguars downed
the Owls, 4-3.
The loss, Joshua’s second
consecutive, dropped the
Owls to 15-2 overall and 2-2
in district play.
“We played well the
first couple of innings and
just couldn’t finish,” Josh-
ua coach Kirt Taylor said.
“When you have a three run
lead going into the seventh
inning, you should win that
game.”
The Owls scored once in
the first and added a pair
of runs in the second for
a 3-0 lead. Joshua starter
Luke Jones held the Jaguars
scoreless for the first six in-
nings.
Joshua returns to district
play Friday at 7-4A-leading
Cleburne. The Owls host sec-
ond-place Crowley Tuesday.
Burleson downs Owls
A shaky first inning cost
Joshua Friday night as the
Owls fell at Burleson, 6-1, in
a district game.
Burleson scored four
runs in the first inning off
starter Abran Luevano.
Four of the Elks’ first five
batters reached base and
scored. The blow of the in-
ning was a two-run single
by Tyler Smith.
Luevano induced an in-
ning-ending double play to
get out of the first, then re-
tired 10 of next 11 Elks.
“He’s a sophomore,”
Taylor said. “He struggled
in the first and then settled
down and pitched a heck of
game.”
The Owls had their trou-
bles against Elks’ starter
Levi Scott, who set down the
first six batters he faced.
In the third inning, Josh-
ua worked Scott loading the
bases with two outs on three
walks. Taylor Howard drew
a bases loaded walk to cut
the lead to 4-1 but Devon
Scoggins grounded out to
end the threat.
After stranding two run-
ners in the fourth, the Owls
loaded the bases in the fifth
on consecutive singles by
Tanner Matthews, How-
ard and Scoggins. With
No. 5 hitter Blake Ballard
at the plate, Taylor called
for a bunt. Ballard, who
had struck out looking in
his first two at-bats, got
the bunt down, but it went
right to relief pitcher Sabo
Murray, who started an
ending-inning home-to-
first double play.
“I was just trying to make
something happen,” Taylor
sid. “He’s our best bunter
and he bunts it right back to
the pitcher. That’s when you
know things just aren’t going
right for you.”
Burleson added a run in
the fifth on a Lane Tahmah-
kera home run and an Eric
Gonzales RBI-single. The
Owls stranded two runners
in the sixth and one in the
seventh.
“We stranded too many
guys, walked too many bat-
ters, struggled at the plate
and gave up a four-run first
inning, other than that it’s
a 2-1 ball game,” Taylor
said.
SOFTBALL
Lady C w s on a roll in district
BY RICKY MOORE
mooresports@thestargroup. com
After getting off to a slow
start in District 7-4A softball
play, Joshua has settled down
and begun playing solid.
With Tuesday’s 10-0 run-
rule win over Cleburne, the
Lady Owls (9-8,4-2) have won
four straight district games.
“Our defense has tight-
ened up,” Joshua coach
Traci Brooks said. “The wins
have given us confidence.
Last night was the first night
we had everyone back.”
The Lady Owls showed
that confidence Tuesday
night, scoring seven runs in
the first inning.
“We came out hitting,”
Brooks said. “We scored five
runs before we made an out.
We came out and got good
pitches to hit.”
Shea Wood registered the
complete five-inning shutout.
“She is pitching well right
now,” Brooks said. “She has
cut down on the walks and is
letting her defense take care
of things.”
The Lady Owls host
Granbury Friday and host
Crowley Tuesday.

at 6 p.m. Friday at Burleson Stadium.

“Crowley is a great team,” he
said. “We have a lot of respect
for them and how they do
things. They have had a great
season.”
Joshua played a tune up
game Tuesday against Ar-
lington Seguin. The game
came on the heels of their
win over Venus. Kaitlin Mar-
tindale and Alyssa Williams
each scored a pair of goals
in the win. Amber West also
notched a goal. Yevette Bes-
sent registered three assists
for the Lady Owls.
“We played pretty well,”
Brooks said. “We controlled
the run of play. It was a good
win because everyone got to
see some playing time which
could be big in the playoffs. I
thought we played fairly solid.”
Owls break
scoring slump
Offensively, Joshua’s boys
soccer team had been strug-
gling to score. Friday night,
the Owls broke the slump
scoring with a 6-0 victory
over Venus in both teams’
District 14-A finales.
Before the match, Joshua
coach Gary Walker saw his
team was a little sluggish.
Part of that was because they
were playing earlier than
normal as part of a double-
header.
“I gathered them together
and told them I didn’t want
us going into the playoffs
playing sluggish.” he said.
The talk must have worked
as the Owls (10-11, 5-5) played
well, according to Walker, se-
curing third place in 15-4A.
“It was a good offen-
sive game,” Walker said. “I
thought that helped us a lot.
Now we know that we can
score. It has been a mental
thing with our lack of scor-
ing. Players have been tenta-
tive about taking shots. The
game got us out of our offen-
sive slump.”
The Owls spread out the
scoring as Will Campbell,
Ryan Kunkel, Dustyn Boyd,
Daniel Arevalo, Kelsey Bes-
sent and Colton Jones each
found the back of the net. Ar-
bjon Shemo and Jones each
registered assists.
Now the Owls must face
Arlington Seguin, the second-
place team from District 16-
4A. The Class 4A Region I bi-
district playoff match is set for
6 p.m. Friday at Kennedale.
The Cougars’ Brandon
Head knows something
about scoring. The senior,
who will play at Our Lady of
Lake University, has scored
43 goals this season.
“We are going to put some
new wrinkles in defensively
to try and slow him down,”
Walker said. “By the time we
play, we will have watched
more film of Seguin than any-
one we have played this sea-
son. We should be prepared
by Friday. We want to be the
best we can be by Friday.”
The Owls are making their
third consecutive playoff ap-
pearance and their fifth in six
years.
