N.I.E Activity Page
Newspapers in Education (NIE) is one of the
most exciting educational tools available today.
The Joshua Star will provide more than 30 weeks of
newspapers to each student in sixth-grade classes
in Joshua schools through generous donations
from local businesses who are supporters of edu-
cation. This weekly page is also sponsored by local
businesses for students to use for other learning
activities throughout the school year.
The weekly newspaper is a dynamic textbook
that chronicles our times and stimulates young
minds. Think about how the newspaper keeps
you informed about state and county events,
the economy, and local news. What you may not
realize is the newspaper gives you a daily lesson
in geography, economics, math, technology, sci-
ence and social studies. It is the most up-to-date
textbook available.
As a way of thanking these sponsors for their
support of the Newspapers in Education pro-
gram, we encourage you to patronize when the
opportunity arises.

Now, write a paragraph about an interesting event in
your life. You can make it up if you'd like! Try to use your
expressions from page 1 to make your story more
interesting. Reread your writing when you are finished to
make sure it is grammatically correct and makes sense.

A persuasive narrative states and supports a position or opinion.
Tips for Writing a Persuasive Narrative;
1. Introduction - Decide on your audience and purpose. Using a strong
beginning, state your position or opinion. You may list
your reasons, but do not explain them in this paragraph.
2. Reasons - List at least three reasons. Tell why and give examples.
3. Conclusion - Re-state your opinion and tie up loose ends. Make a statement.
There has been some discussion about instituting a policy that allows students to have
a cell phone at school in the classroom. Decide if you agree with allowing cell phones
in school or not. Use the model below to write a persuasive narrative, explaining
your position.
