THE PUBLIC FORUM
Editor:
Earlier this year I had need for
emergency transport to Hopkins
County Memorial Hospital and
called 911. Champion EMS
ambulance service in Emory was
prompt, timely and professional,
as in previous trips.
It is particularly important to
us to be taken to a hospital where
our primary doctor and most of
our specialists are located. Until
now, we have never been billed
for the transports due to our excel-
lent medical coverage.
On our most recent transports,
however, we were billed by Cham-
pion EMS for “non- covered extra
rural mileage”. Confused, I called
the Champion billing office in
Longview and inquired about this
charge. The explanation given
was that we did not request trans-
port to the nearest hospital.
When asked about which hos-
pital we were expected to request,
they gave the name of a hospital
we had never heard of in Grand
Saline. We decided to drive to
this hospital and found the dif-
ference in mileage between being
transported from our home to
Hopkins County Memorial Hos-
pital vs. this hospital was about
four miles.
After much research, numer-
ous phone calls, and aggravation,
we were routed to the corpo-
rate Regional General Manag-
er of Champion EMS, Mr. John
Holdin.
Mr. Holdin was extremely gra-
cious and helpful. He explained
the policy of Champion EMS’
local routing procedure. He
emphasized that anyone living in
NE Texas, east of Dallas to the
Oklahoma/Louisiana border, can
request transport to ANY hospital
within that region without addi-
tional charge. This includes Tyler.
He took care of our extra mileage
charge saying it was in error.
Mr. Holden mentioned a
membership program offered by
Champion EMS. One member-
ship includes the entire family/
household for an annual charge of
$48 and entitles members need-
ing emergency transport, or a
care flight, to free transport. This
could amount to considerable sav-
ings for members and well worth
the nominal charge. He said that
complete details of their member-
ship program and how to apply
can be found on their website,
Champion EMS.com.
Kudos to Champion EMS local
and corporate for their excellent
service.

Owning The Process
Having spent 40+ years in
industrial manufacturing, I am
familiar with many terms and
concepts that are part of that
business. Some of the terms are
universal and apply throughout
life.
One such term is “owning
the process.” In manufactur-
ing, regardless of the task one
performs, one is responsible to
assure the task performed meets
all criteria and specifications. In
other words one “owns” the pro-
cess. If the product does not meet
“specs,” it is incumbent on the
owner of the process to repair the
process and the product.
Excuses such as “I did not
know,” “Jim Bob did not do
his part right” or “they sent the
wrong stuff’ are not acceptable.
If “Jim Bob” or “they” failed to
perform their part of the process
correctly, return the faulty prod-
uct to the owner of the process
preceding your process, so that
party can repair his process.
By now you may be wonder-
ing where this is going. That is a
good question and the answer is
simple enough: Just look at the
current Federal Administration
in Washington, D.C. No matter
what happens, they do not know
what happened nor are they are
responsible. They simply do own
their process!
This is by design. They do
not wish to be responsible for
anything. In their mindset, if
one is not responsible, one can-
not be held accountable. In the
industrial world, these folks
would quickly be relieved of
their responsibilities. In the real
world, if one cannot or will not
perform his process to “spec”, he
is an unnecessary expense and
must be eliminated.
Another term common in the
business world is “The Peter
Principle,” which postulates that
“one is promoted to the point of
one’s incompetence and then one
is fired for that incompetence!”
President Obama, Vice President
Biden, former Secretary of State
Clinton and most of Congress
should have been fired long ago!
There are those who would
argue that we are being governed
by idiots. If that is indeed the
case, and a strong argument can
be made for it, we, the voting
public, are idiots for allowing
this to be so.
