of the city’s website.
About outdoor
warning sirens
In order to provide resi-
dents with the most effec-
tive outdoor warning system
possible, many municipali-
ties utilize outdoor warning
sirens for storm warnings, as
well as a complete solution
for emergency and mass no-
tifications.
Outdoor Warning Sirens
are primarily used to warn
residents of severe weather
conditions.
Sirens are still the most
effective method to warn the
population at large in the
shortest amount of time. It
is useful to people who may
be outdoors at ball games, in
their yard or anywhere else
where they are not in contact
with the normal news media
channels - radio, TV or local
public address systems.
The City of Joshua op-
erates eight early warning
sirens, geographically lo-
cated throughout the city.
During times of potential
severe weather, the Joshua
emergency operations cen-
ter monitors weather alerts,
weather radar and warnings
from the National Weather
Service so that residents can
be warned as early as pos-
sible of weather threats that
are approaching the city and
surrounding area.
Sirens warn of a pos-
sible threat that is in or near
the city so that residents can
take cover and be aware of
the weather threats that are
in the area. The storm sirens
will sound for three minutes
and then turn off. If neces-
sary, the sirens will be re-
activated as many times as
necessary or until the threat
has passed over the area.
Residents will still need
to monitor the local weather
reports on TV or radio for
additional information. Visit
the city’s website at www.
cityofj oshuatx.us/emergen-
cymanagement or the Na-
tional Weather Service’s Fort
Worth Forecast Office at
www.weather.noaa.gov.
Following are a few severe
weather facts:
Lightning causes an av-
erage of 55-60 fatalities and
400 injuries each year, with
costs of more than $1 billion
in insured losses.
Tornadoes cause an av-
erage of 60-65 fatalities and
1,500 injuries each year, and
can produce wind speeds in
excess of 200 mph.
Straight-line winds can
exceed 125 mph, cause de-
struction equal to a tornado
and are extremely dangerous
to aviation.
Flash floods and floods
are the top cause of deaths as-
sociated with thunderstorms,
with more than 90 fatalities
each year.
Hail can be larger than
a softball (5 inches in diame-
ter) and causes more than $1
billion in crop and property
damage annually.
Garbage bills can
be paid online
Joshua residents can now
pay their garbage and recy-
cling bin online.

City Park
Here are a few things you
may want to know about City
Park to help plan your visit.
Q: Is swimming allowed
in the park pond?
A: No. The pond serves
many roles in the park but
especially as the storage for
park irrigation water. The
park irrigation system takes
water from the pond and wa-
ters the park and ball fields.
Large intake lines are sub-
merged in the pond that feed
the system. Swimming too
close to that inlet could be
dangerous and could pull a
swimmer under the water.
Q: Can I fish in the park
pond?
A: Yes. The pond has been
stocked with catfish, blue
gill, red ear and largemouth
bass. However, it is catch and
release only and a fishing li-
cense issued by the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Depart-
ment is required.
Q: Can I camp overnight
in the park?
A: No. Currently over-
night camping is prohibited
in the park.
Q: Do I need to reserve a
picnic table in order to use one?
A: No. Picnic tables are on
a first-come, first-served ba-
sis. You may also use the out-
door grills as well. The only
thing you need to reserve to
guarantee it is available for
your needs is the pavilion.
For information on pavilion
rental, contact city hall at
817-558-7447.
Q: Is the playground open
to the public even if someone
has reserved the pavilion?
A: Yes. The playground
is open to the public for play
any time during regular park
operating hours. Even if the
pavilion is reserved for a pri-
vate function, the playground
is for public use and can-
not be reserved for a private
function.
Q: Can I reserve one of the
ball fields for a family game?
A: Yes. Field reservations
are scheduled by the Joshua
Baseball Association and all
field use is scheduled through
the JBA. For information,
visit the JBA website at www.
eteamx.com/jbatx/
Q: Is smoking allowed
anywhere in the park?
A: No. The use of tobacco
products in any form, any-
where in the park, is prohib-
ited by city ordinance and
that includes the parking lots.
For more information on
City Park visit www.cityof-
j oshuatx.us and click on

mation” on the right hand
side of the page under Com-
munity Interest.
