Giarles Douglas
Receives BS Degree
Charles Douglas son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harrison Douglas of
Bartlett was among 394 can-
didates who received degrees
at Baylor University's summer
commencement exercises Fri-
day morning receiving his B.
S. degree.
Douglas attended TJC for
two years where he was elect-
ed Mr. TJC and also was listed
among "Who's Who in Junior
Colleges of America" his soph-
omore year. He is presently
teaching in the Mart Public
Schools.
Graduates represented 37
states and several foreign
countries. 228 bachelor's 133
master's and 12 doctorate de-
grees were conferred. Twenty
juris doctor degrees also were
awarded.
Dr. Herbert Colvin profes
sor of music performed the
orgnn processional and reces-
sional. He accompanied music
professor Andrew White who
sang "Love Never Faileth."
The Reverend Marion B.
Smith pastor of Alanreed Bap-
tist Church of Alanreed de-
livered the invocation. The
Reverend J. W. L. Adams Jr.
pastor of First Baptist Church
of Victoria gave the benediction.
Baylor President Abner V.
McCall was speaker for the
occasion and was assisted by
deans of the university s va
rious schools in conferring the
degrees.
Baylor conferred 892 de-
grees in May and 279 de
grees in January to bring the
1969 total to nearly 1600.

Dies In Winters
Funeral services for Gus A.
Gerhart 82 of Winters brother-in-law
of Mrs. Robert Spie-
golhauer of Bartlett were con
ducted at 2:30 p. m. Monday
at tho St. John Lutheran
Church in Winters with the
Ilev. Walter C. Probst pastor
officiating. Burial was in the
Lutheran Cemetery.
Mr. Gerhart died at 6:30
a. m. Sunday in Winters Muni
cipal Hospital. He has been in
ill health for the past two
years.
Born Nov. 8 1886. in San
Antonio he moved in 1901 to
Runnels County where he
stock farmed east of Winters
until 1943 when he and his
wife moved to Winters.
He was a member of the
Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife:
two sons Wilmer Gerhart of
Winters and Charlie Gerhart
of Lometa; two daughters
Mrs. Jake Presley and Mrs.
Calvin Hoppe. both of Winters:
two brothers Martin and John
both of Winters; nine grand
children and six great-grand
children.
Those from here attending
the funeral services were Mr.
and Mrs. Edmund Spiegel-
hauer Sr. Mrs. Robert Spie-
geiiiauer and Mrs. Alice Po-witzky.

Seeks Degree
David Leath Cocke of Bart-
lett son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse
Cocke is among 445 provision
al candidates for degrees at
Lamar State College of Tech
nology. Tho summer commen
cement exercies are scheduled
for Saturday August 30 at
9 a. m. in McDonald Gymna-
sium. Miss Celeste Kitchen col-
lege registrar said the current
class will push Lamar "Tech
over the 10000 mark in con
ferring of degrees. A combined
Januaxy-May class of 841
brought the 17-year degree
total of the college to 9860.
Dr. Preston B. Williams
dean of the School of Liberal
Arts will give the commence
ment address. Certification of
degrees will be by the acade-
mic deans and Dr. Frank A.
Thomas president of the col-
lege will confer the degrees.
Dad seeks the M. S. de-
gree in chemistry.

Davis Joins
Dallas Rockets
Melvin Davis local resident
has recently signed a two-year
contract with the Dallas Rock
ets of the Texas Professional
I'ootbaii .League. Davis is a
graduate of Bartlett High
School where he played full
back with the Bartlett Bull-
dogs. The Rockets lost their first
pre-season game with the Mex-
ico Golden Aztecs by a score
of 13-3. During the game Da-
vis was able to pick up 43
yards on a run which set up a
field goal.
Davis picked up 166 yards
rushing in a game played with
the San Antonio Toros. In the
third quarter Davis scored his
first professional touchdown
at the end of a 76 yard drive.
Head coach Joe Varret of
Rice University stated "with
Davis on the team this is the
greatest thing that has hap-
pened to the Rockets in three
years because he carries the
ball with speed like a bullet."

visited here Thursday with
Mr .and Mrs. E. R. Bartlett

all of Temple visited here dur-
ing the week-end with Mr.
and Mrs. Buford Stevenson.
