Oil & grease on rug
By Polly Cramer
POLLY'S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY - 1 have a serious problem and no
solution. When mv husband was putting the air condi-
tioner in the window he first put it on the floor and when
he lifted it up there was oil and grease on the light
colored carpet. Is there anyhing I can use to get this out
without hurting the carpet? — DEB
DEAR DEB — You do have a problem as grease and
oil stains require immediate action before drying for a
sucfessful removal job. If at all possible I suggest you
call a professional rug cleaner since so much time has
elapsed. If that is not possible and you want to make a
try I will give you a procedure that may, or may not,
work due to the time lapse. Of course, one always
should test the effect of anything to be used.
Apply cleaning fluid and blot. Repeat until cloth no
longer picks up any stains. If any spots remain try a
mixture of one-fourth cup white vinegar in three-fourths
cup lukewarm water. Apply to area and pat with a
clean cloth. Leave about 15 minutes and then blot and
rinse with eloth moistened with clean warm water.
Sponge in direction of the pile and blot with a clean
cloth - POLLY.
DEAR POLLY — Boiling salt water will immediately kill
grass or weeds growing between the sections in a cement
walk. — BEA
DEAR POLLY — Those readers who are not lucky enough
to have a Polly'c coupon clipper will find that a large straight
pin works fine for this. Lay the paper flat and run the point of
the pin around the item to be clipped. It will then tear out
easily. - MRS V H

Dear Ann Landers: I need to
tell you "thanks.” I have Y
already thanked God. I didn't
write to you three years ago,
but somebody else with the
same problem did — and I took
your advice.
My son was a drug addict,
headed for destruction. I was
helping to destroy him by being
permissive in so many ways.
I provided a nice home and
good meals for free. I knew
Tom was stealing money from
my purse and selling things out
of the house to support his
habit. Yet, I did nothing —
afraid of a confrontation.
After one very bad ex-
perience, I read these words in
your column: ‘ ‘ People will do to
you only that which you will
allow them to do.” That night I
ordered Tom out of the house.
He refused to go. I called the
police. When they took him
away I cried for hours.
Tonight I cried again, but this
time they were tears of joy. My
son has completed a drug-
recovery program. He made all
A’s in his college classes last
Ann
Landers
semester. He is happy, excited
about plans for the future. He is
very busy these days, but
promised to stop by Sunday to
do the yard. He will be here. He
keeps his promises now.
This letter is to thank you for
helping someone who didn’t
even write. I didn’t have to. I
read your column every day
and recognized my advice
when 1 saw it — Forever In
Your Debt
Dear Forever: No
satisfaction can equal the
pleasure of knowing I have
"connected.” And now I hope
others who are coddling,
housing and feeding pot-heads
and drug freaks will take a
page from your book. No one
ever shapes up so long as he is
protected against the con-
sequences. Most derelicts must
hit bottom before they can start
to climb up.
Dear Ann Landers: Several
years ago I remember reading
in you column a letter from a
woman who had an em-
barrassing problem. She wet
her pants every time she
laughed hard. I thought it was
pretty funny at the time, but I
have changed my tune because
now I have the same problem.
Your advice to that woman
was to buy some rubber pants.
Will you please tell me where
one can buy rubber pants for an
adult? I would die if my
husband ever knew I wrote to
you, so please reply in the
paper. He opens everything
that comes in the mail if he gets
to the box first. Thanks a lot. —

Local church opens
Canada fund drive
The First Baptist Church of
Sulphur Springs will begin a
drive Sunday to send 50 to 60
young people and adults to
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan in
July 1981 on a nine-day summer
mission trip. The trip is being
planned as part of the southern
Baptist Convention’s plan to
evangelize the world by the
year 2000.
Saskatoon is a city of 150,000
people in the heartland of
Canada. It is an agricultural
area similar to the Great Plains
region of the United States.
The youth will be working
under the direction of Henry
Blackaby, pastor of the First
Baptist Church in Saskatoon.
This church, composed of some
150 members, has 40 mission
and preaching points in a 150-
mile radius of Saskatoon. The
young people will be divided
into teams of 4 to 6 people to go
into selected mission points to
help a local group conduct
Bible schools, backyard Bible
studies, church services, sing,
and witness about their faith in

Dear Ann Landers: 1 have
been married for nearly three
years and am three months
pregnant. When I meet
relatives or friends the first
question they ask is, "Was it
planned or an accident’’ ”
My husband and I have been
wanting to start a family for the
last two years. This pregnancy
is no accident. I really get upset
when I am asked such a per-
sonal question. Please tell me
how to respond. — Canadian
Rage
Dear C.R.: Anyone who
would ask such a question is
crude, insensitive and nosy.
Such clods don’t deserve
careful treatment. Simply look
at them with astonishment and
answer their question with two
of your own: "Now, why in the
world would you ask anything
so personal as that? What
possible difference could it
make to you?"

We have changed the hand

Undoubtedly, the main
thrust of the article was to
show a play that Work may
well have invented which was
the establishment of an extra
entry by playing two high
cards on one of more tricks
South wins the heart lead,
leads his nine of diamonds and
overtakes with dummy's jack.
A spade finesse succeeds and
he overtakes his eight of dia-
monds with dummy’s- queen.
He-notes that both opponents
have followed to that second
diamond so that the ten will
fall on the next diamond lead.
South takes a second black-

taking his diamond king with
dummy’s ace. finesses again

The group will undergo
several months of intensive
training prior to July that will
include Bible study, personal
evangelism, discipleship
training, and methods of
teaching Bible school and

In addition to this, the group
will commit themselves to be in
Sunday School and church each
Sunday and to participate in
local evangelism efforts in the
next year.
The group will fly to Canada
and each person will be asked
to pay approximately one-
fourth of the total cost of the
trip, with the church budgeting
money in 1980 and 1981 to cover
the remaining cost.
According to Jack Robbins,
