Sweetwater gets water
SWEETWATER, Texas (AP)
— This West Texas town’s
prayers were answered this
weekend when five inches of
rain relieved a critical water
shortage.
“I’ve become a total believer.
Amen,” said City Manager Joe
Benton as he looked out over his
lawn Sunday, rain dripping
from his face.
A thunderstorm pelted this
Nolan County town of 12,000
Saturday night.
The rain ended a drought so
severe that 500 persons had held
hands, prayed and sang hymns
on the grounds of the Nolan
County Courthouse June 1.
The Saturday night deluge
eclipsed overnight the less-
than-five inches of rain that had
fallen the previous six months
here, bringing the annual
moisture total up to nearly
normal for this time of year in
West Central Texas.
The Rev. Orval Brantley, a
Baptist pastor who had
organized the prayer service,
had asked “God to give us rain
in your own good time.”
Benton said it was the biggest
rainfall here in more than a
year.
The city manager said that
“while I wasn’t at the prayer
service because I was out of
town, I will most certainly
endeavor to be present at all
prayer services for rain in the
future.”
Public water usage had been
cut back drastically because of
the low water in the city’s
reservoirs. The rain produce at
least a two-foot rise in the level
at Oak Creek Lake.

Need for cataract surgery?
By Lawrence Lamb, M.D.
DEAR DR. LAMB - Is the
ultrasonic method of cataract
removal accepted and
approved by the medical
profession? If so, where can I
find a doctor who uses this
procedure?
DEAR READER - Yes,
this method enables the eye
surgeon to make a very small
incision, fragment the cata-
ract and suck out the little
pieces. There is some advan-
tage to having a very small
incision as opposed to a larger
incision.
A decision as to whether a
person needs a cataract oper-
ation and what kind of sur-
gery should be done depends
on the nature of each individu-
al case. To find out if you’re
really a candidate for surgery
and, if so, what kind of sur-
gery you need, you’ll certainly
need the evaluation by a com-
petent ophthalmologist.
Meanwhile, I am sending
you The Health Letter num-
ber 13-6, Your Cataracts Are
Coming. Other readers who
want this issue can send 75
cents with a long, stamped,
self-addressed envelope for it.
Send your request to me, in
care of this newspaper, P.O.

DEAR DR. LAMB - My
nine-week-old niece was diag-
nosed as having galactosemia.
She was only two weeks old.
ptoms and
that she
was lacking an enzyme. She
also had jaundice and an
enlarged liver. Her liver is
still enlarged. Is this normal?
We understand that with
the galactosemia she will nev-
er be able to have any milk
products or sugar in her diet.
We’re told that if she stays on
a very strict diet, free of milk
and sugar, that she can live a
normal healthy life. Is this
correct?
DEAR READER - This is
a very rare disease and there
are two types of enzyme defi-
ciencies that can cause galac-
tosemia. And, of course, I
can’t tell from your letter
which form your niece has.
Galactose is one of the three
basic single sugars. It’s only
formed in making milk. It is
not found in any sugar except
milk sugar. The other two sin-
gle sugars are glucose and
fructose. The combination of
these two provide ordinary
table sugar. Glucose and fruc-
tose are the source of starch
in vegetables and the sugars
in fruit. ’
f
Babies with galactosemia
are deficient in an enzyme
that enables the body to meta-
bolize or break down- the
galactose sugar into carbon
dioxide and release its energy.
Because of this, in the classic
form the galactose products
will accumulate in the liver,
causing the liver enlargement
and they can also accumulate
in the eyes causing cataracts.
It’s perfectly true that if the
child’s problem is discovered
very early and all sources of
galactose are eliminated from
the diet that the child will get
along all right, provided there
are no other metabolic prob-
lems present.
Now since ordinary table
sugar does not contain any
galactose, in the classic form
of the disease it shouldn’t
cause any difficulty unless
there are other enzymes miss-
ing that interfere with the
metabolism of these sugars as
well. Your niece’s doctor, I’m
sure, will be familiar with this
and know whether it’s advis-
able or not. If your niece just
has the pure galactosemia and
does not use any milk or any
foods made with any milk at
all in her early life, she should
have a good chance of leading
a normal life.

DEAR DR BLAKER - I
have been too embarrassed to
write because I should be able
to solve this problem by
myself.
My 4-year-old son has
become a bed-wet ter I had
him toilet trained long before
he was 3. and everything went
well for about a year
Then I got pregnant A
month later, my husband and
I got a divorce and my son
starting wetting his bed again
It was a terrible time’
I’ve tried everything to stop
this babyish behavior I have
regulated his liquid intake,
taken him to the bathroom
during the night, paddled him
and hooked him up to a bed-
wetting alarm, which buzzes
most of the time
I have also taken him to
doctors who say there is no
physiological reasob for the
becl-wetting
lam raising two kids alone
I don't have money for a
psychologist You are my last
hope. -
DEAR READER - Your
pregnancy and divorce must
have been very stressful for
everyone, including your 4-
year-old son I am not
surprivM that he started bed-
wetting again ->•
After all. he lost both his
father and his position as No
1 baby Because using the toi-
let was his most recently
acquired skill, it would natu-
rally be the first to go
Try sta ting over Put him
back in diapers
Do not scold him for wett-
ing. but do praise him when he
uses the toile(.' Don't get
angry with him Don't react
when you think be is wetting
only to make you mad.
Remember, regression is a
child's way of expressing
insecurity He needs a lot of
reassurance right now
Spending some time alone
with him when the I
around will hasten the 1
process Believe me,
come around
