Supermarket shopper: double reward waits
Refund seekers look forward to summer clean-up
By MARTIN SLOANE
When you visit a park or ther
recreational area and see
someone bending down, picking
up a candy wrapper and
stuffing it into a pocket,
chances are that the person is a
refunder.
'We’re Cleaning Up’ will be
the motto of millions of
refunders who will visit our
parks and recreational areas
this summer.
Not only will they be looking
to enjoy the beauties of nature.
They will also be looking for
things like Ritz Cracker boxes,
Hershey wrappers and Kool-
Aid packets. Just about every
package from a national-brand
product is a potential proof of
purchase, required for a
valuable cash refund — if not
now, then at some future date.
Many of these refunders will
send the box tops and labels
they pick up in the parks back
to manufacturers for refunds
that will help pay for their
vacations
By the end of August, our
parks — even our highways —
will be a lot cleaner than they
would otherwise be thanks to
refunders. And this massive
national cleanup will be ac-
complished without adding one
new employee to a federal or
state payroll!
Will refunders get the credit
they deserve for their efforts?
Did the president honor Mary
Ryan for picking up 843 Trident
wrappers in Yosemite Valley
last summer?
Of course not! But at least
they can console themselves
with their refunds.
Here are two examples of
refunders who would otherwise
surely have gone unnoticed.
DEAR SUPERMARKET
SHOPPER — My daughter’s
fourth-grade class went on a
field trip to a cave.
While I was following the
children and crawling on my
hands andknees, I came face to
face with a can of Hormel
Vienna Sausage. I quickly
stripped the label from the can
and stuffed it in my pocket.
Crawling further into the
cave, I came across a can of
Van Camps Beans, cigarette
packages and much more.
As I left the cave, a little boy
camerunning over and handed
me two Chunky wrappers. This
certainly made my trip more
exciting! — Betty K. from
Huntsville, Ala. *
DEAR SUPERMARKET
SHOPPER - During the
summer our family goes on a
lot of picnics.
When we arrive at the park,
we give each child a sack. Then
they’re off to see who can find
the most cans, bottles and
boxes.
This gives me a chance to get
organized and start our food
cooking. In less than an hour,
they are back with sacks full of
wrappers and labels from..
potato chips, hot do^s,
American cheese, fruit and
vegetable cans, fruit drinks,
baby food and much more.
Most times, these proofs of
purchase bring me refunds that
more than pay for our picnic* I
would also like to mention_that
we have received a lot of praise
for cleaning up the parks. —
Connie J. from Des Moines,
Iowa.
Even if you are not an avid
refunder, please help to keep
our parks and recreation^
areas clean. Remember, the
wrapper you save may be a
valuable proof of purchase.

Scripture Reading forToday: Luke 18:1-8
SPIRITUAL RESPIRATION
. . . men ought always to pray, and not to faint.
i , ‘ :r Luke 18:1
A^OUNG child at oitr home put a large piece of,hard
/candy in his mouth. Fearing that someone had seen
him take it, he tried to swallow it whole. Immedi-
ately he began to choke, and in a few moments he turned
blue and tainted. Unable to remove the object*by the
usual means, I pushed my fingers down into his throat and
with great difficulty finally extracted the candy. How I
praised the Lord when little Davy regained consciousness!
I have -thought 01 'that incident many times, and it has
feminded-me of. a spiritual truth that is vital to every be-
liever. Any obstacle which cuts off our prayer life and re-
stricts our ."spiritual breathing" is extremely dangerous.
Unless we continually take in the fresh oxygen of God's
mercy and grace, we too will soon "faint."
)■ Wilbur Chapman once visited F. B. Meyer and in-
quired. "What's the matter with me? So many times I seem,
utterly powerless in my Christian life!" Meyer replied,
"Have you ever tried to breathe out three times while only
breathing,in once?" "No, I don't think I have," Chapman
answered. "Well, try it." He did, but had to inha'e almost
immediately. "Don't you know," said Meyer, "ihat you
must always inhale before you can exhale? Breathing out
is in the same proportion \p what you breathe in!" He
then made this application: "We must fill the reservoir
of our soul by prayer and the study of God's Word before
we can draw out for service!"
Christian, how is your spiritual respiration? Are you
praying daily, or is something sinful or worldly blocking
your channel of communication with God? —H.G.B.
Prayer is the Christian's vital breath,
Unuttdred or expressed;.
It strengthens him in life and death
And makes him truly hirst. —Montgomery, alt.
THOT: Prayer is man's lifeline to Cod.
