By Oswald Jacoby
and Alan Sontag
The six-heart contract
reached by North-South is
ludicrous.
On an unlucky day, with
both heart honors badly
placed, even four hearts
might not succeed However,
this was rubber bridge and
our South player was down
quite a bit In a blaze of opti-
mism, he tried for the vulner-
able slam.
Declarer won the spade
lead in his hand with the ace
and surveyed the dummy
Slam appeared to depend
upon West holding both the
king and jack of hearts, a slim
25 percent chance Four of
dummy's diamond losers
could be discarded on declar-
er's strong club suit after
trumps were pulled.
At trick two declarer led a
heart to the 10 which won. He
next played the king of spades
and ruffed a spade. Another
successful heart finesse and
the ace of trumps settled the
opponents’ trumps.
All that declarer had to do
now was cash his five club
tricks Because of the single-
ton honor in dummy, South
realized he would have to
overtake the jack with his
queen and hope for an even
break in the suit. If either
opponent originally started
with five or more clubs, he
would go down.
Now a funny thing
happened South led the last
trump from dummy, hoping
for a defensive error Some-
one with five small clubs
might pitch one, he hoped
East, of course, discarded his
last spade
\c South now led the jack of
clubs from dummy and forgot
to overtake it. He had been so
lost in thought on this hand
that he blacked out and
allowed the jack to win the
trick He moaned and said, I
guess everything's going
wrong today”
Fortunately, the god of dis-
tribution was kind to him He
had made the' only play to ful-
fill his slam. South led ,a dia-
mond from dummy and East
was forced to win his ace
With only clubs in his hand,
East led a club and South took
the last four tricks with the
ace, king, queen and 10 of
clubs

Dear Ann Landers: This
letter is in response to one you
received liom a .homosexual
signed Name Deleted by
Bequest.”
That pefson made a crazy
statement and. to.my surprise--
you believed it! He said,
'Homosexuals can recognize
each other at a glance.”
WRONG, The cliche, "It takes
one to know one,” doesn’t hold
true in this case.
I'm 100 percent straight and
not the least bit effeminate-
looking, yet I have been
propositioned by homosexuals
for as long as I can remember.
I have been offered money by-
strangers who seem to appear
out of nowhere. It's dammed
annoying the way they seem to
think I am one of "the boys in
the band.”
Personally, P have nothing
against homosexuals. I believe
a person’s sexual preference is
his own business. When I am
propositioned by one, I say,
"No thanks, 1 prefer girls.
Please leave me alone!” After
that, no problem. I enjoy your
column but I had to let you
know that your correspondent's
theory was all wet. — Straight
As A String In Houston
Dear String: I nave received
so many letters from straights
who,'like you, have been
-propositioned- by gays that I
have reevaluated my position.
(t did seem reasonable to me
that one gay tould spot another,
in the same way that a
heterosexual who wants te play
around'can spot a "playmate.”
Eye contact, a know ing look, a
seductive smile or a touch of
the hand can say plenty.
Often homosexuals will make
a pass if they are attracted to
someone, on the outside chance
that they might score. They
have learned from experience
that some straights will say
"OK" for money or simply the
excitement of trying something
different.
Dear Ann: This letter,is for,
that lady in Shelby, N.C., who
was angry because the minister
wished her a happy birthday
and told her age from the
pulpit, 1 want to pass on a little
something that might calm her
down and make her see things
Ann
Landers
in a different light.
On my kitchen wall hangs a
small plaque. I thank God for
every day I wake up and can
read it. The message is as
follows:
"Don’t regret growing old.
It's a privilege denied to
many.” Sign me — Grateful
For Every Day In Hammond,
Ind.
DearGrateful: Thank you for
sharing. Speaking strictly for
myself, I don't mind getting
older but I hope never to get
old. One of the youngest women
I know is 87. Harriet W. is a
constant reminder that it’s not
what’s up front that counts but
what’s upstairs.
Dear Ann Landers: I’m
writing in an,effort to, prevent
people from missing-a won-
derful time. 1 am talking about
high school reunions, It’s im-
possible to get in touch with
every graduate — especially
the .way people move around
these days.
If someone has been married
twice and now lives in Denver
and her parents retired and
moved to Phoenix and her best
friend in Oklahoma has an
unlisted phone number, how
can we get the address?
The best way not to miss out
is for the graduate to contact
his or her high school principal
and find out who is in charge of
the class reunion. In other
words, don’t expect the reunion
chairman to find YOU. Write a
letter and find the chairman. —
