It’s a game we play. Every time the phone rings
during M A S H my husband and I fake one another
out. Last Monday, I won and he took the call.
The tone of his voice made me tune out Alan Alda as
he gasped, “Oh, my God! You’re not serious! When?”
He covered the receiver and shouted to me, “Get on,
tht extension. We’re grandparents!”*
My first reaction was how could that be when none
of our children was married. 1 \ <
My second reaction was would my mother buy the
old Science-Fair-Prbject-That-Got-Out-of-Hand
theory.
The caller was our neighbor who explained that our
Yorkshire terrier, who was never allowed out of the
yard, got out, and her spinster poodle, who was too old
to get pregnant, did, and'in a Sears box in the utility
room were three poodles in Yorkshire terrier bodies
— a virtual billboard for Planned Parenthood.
“What month was Murray born in? ” she asked.
“June.”
“I should have known,” she said. “A,Gemini. They
never finish anything they start.”
“Just a minute,” I said. “Are you implying that
Murray is not willing to accept maternal respon-
6 sibilities?”
“Who are you kidding? Every female dog in the
neighborhood has known him.”
“That’s not true. He lives a monk’s existence
behind a six-foot wall.”
“You’ve heard of the tunnel of love? He invented
it.” * ’ - '
i“I think your Tittle mother’ doesn’t have her act
together and has neither the stability nor the un-
selfishness to raise these puppies. If you will bring
them over here Murray will raise them as a single
parent.” .
The first night, we photographed them from every
angle. Murray moved from one to the other getting to
know them. He was going to make a wonderful father.
The second night he refused to share his food with
them. When they spilled water all over his bed he
crouched behind a waste can. He subsequently
trampled them, bit their tails, rejected them, barked
in their ears and tried to abandon them.
By the end of the week the puppies were deman-
ding, cried all night, frolicked all day and were
driving him crazy. When we returned them to the
mother, our neighbor snapped, “What happened to
Kramer vs. Kramer? ’ ’
Dustin Hoffman wouldn’t have been such a hero
either if his child hadn’t been paper-trained.

DEAR DR. LAMB - Start
ing a few years ago tny hus-
band underwent a personality
change. He had a loss of mem-
ory for awhile and I'm not
sure whether he had a little
stroke or not. He does take
medicine for his heart and
circulation.
One of the things which
really worries me is that he
has a problem with sex
because he develops a pres-
sure or tightness in his chest.
What would cause this? 1 love
him but every time 1 try to
show any affection it doesn't
please him. He gets so moody
and depressed. What could
make a nice man change like
this?
It’s getting more and more
difficult to live with him
because of his moods and
because he doesn’t even like
to talk to me part of the time.
This is entirely different from
the way he used to be. I sure
wish you could give me some
answers to help
♦DEAR READER - This is
a relatively common problem.
Our personality, judgment
and even character are all
related to basic functions in
our brain. The brain is literal-
ly a storage computer for
instructions that control our
behavior It’s true that some
people inherit certain charac-
teristics but these can be mod-
ified bydife experiences. x
When a person has a stroke
or the brain is damaged for
any reason, these instructions
may become garbled because
of basic anatomical and
chemical changes in the brain
itself. When that happens a
person's behavior may be sig-
nificantly altered. In some
instances the individual can’t
do a thing about it. The classic
example is the minister’s wife
who’s shocked when she goes
into the hospital room and
finds that her previously
gentle, kind husband uses foul
language and abuses her.
Some of these changes are
related to circulatory prpb- -
lams that can be improved
Others are not All of these
changes fall into the group of
altered behavior sometimes
classified as senility. A person
doesn’t have to be old, howev-
er, for som • of these charac-

teristics to develop. In other
instances, older people have
underlying medical problems
which might be treated
Now about your husband's
chest pain during sex, that
may be caused by nis underly-
ing heart disease. It could |>e
from overworking his heart
just the same as a person
develop chest pain from
other forms of exertion if he
has a severe underlying heart
problem.
