Dating philosophy
called archaic
By ROBERT WALLACE, Ed.D. 4
Copley News Service
Dr. Wallace: It’s late at night and I’m very upset and "
need your advice. I’m 18, just graduated from high school
and finished In the upper 5 percent of my class while
working part-time over 2S hours a week. I also write and
sing in a choir group.
I love and respect my parents but I’m really disappointed
in their archaic dating philosophy. Jim and I have been
dating for six months. He is responsible and our relationship
is wonderful. He is a true friend and it feels marvelous to
have someone who accepts me as I am. He has never .
pressured me into having a physical relationship.
" My parents have never liked anyone that I have dated.
They also allow me to date only one day a week and for only
three hours.
Somehow my parents discovered that Jim had tried pot at
a party. His parents restricted him because of it but ray
parents forbid me to see Jim again. Pleae understand, he is
not a '•druggie.”
He didn’t get “high” and would never do it again.
Jim and I were looking forward to seeing a lot of each
other this summer before we both go to college.
I told my mother that the only reason she is acting this
way is because she is afraid of losing her oldest child. She
laughed and told me that she was doing it because she did
not want me to get pregnant. I’ve cried so much over this
that I don’t have anymore tears left. — Sadie, Nashua, N.H.
Sadie: You said it perfectly when you said that your
parents’ dating philosophy is archaic and that thfey are
afraid of losing their oldest daughter. Your mother is also
very foolish to suggest that she is doing all this to spare you
the anguish of an unwanted pregnancy.
Some parents (yours included) love and care so much for
their children that they don’t take the time to enjoy them.
Instead of being positive, the parents become negative,
always being afraid — afraid of marijuana, afraid of
pregnancy, afraid of alcohol so they practice “over-kill.”
As long as you live at home, obey the rules layed down by
your parents but keep trying to change them. Enlist all the
adult help that you can — relatives, family, friends, former
teachers, clergy, anyone.
Dr. Wallace: I’m an 18-year-old and my neighbor really
freaked me out.
He is a very successful and well-known businessman in
our town. I really couldn’t believe my eyes but here is what
happened — he "flashed” me. I was walking past his house
when he called my name. When I looked at him he opened
his trench coat and “flashed” me.
My parents know this man socially and in fact they are
going to his house for dinner in a couple of weeks. Please
tell me what to do. — Lisa, Lodi, Calif.
Lisa: Tell your parents exactly what happened. This man
is emotionally ill and needs help desperately. Leave it up to
your parents as to how they want to handle the problem.
Needless to say, they should not attejrd the dinner party at
this man’s house.
Write to Dr. Robert Wallace, TwEEN 12 and 21, Copley
News Service, in care of this newspaper. Please enclose a
stamped, self-addressed envelope.
