Llano Ydlowjackets Lose a Hud One
To Menard in 1959 Grid Season Opener
(Continued front Page 1)
First Quarter
The first quarter was all
Llano’s as Dexter Smith returned
Leggett’s kick-off to the 38-yard
line, and the Jackets rolled up
four first downs in a touchdown
march without losing possession
of the ball. Henry Hammons tore
off 22 yards around left end, and
Billy Clawson hit the middle for
three. Hammons went through
the line for 11 and Smith charg-
ed through for another three.
Clawson, Smith, Simon and llom-
mons each made additional gains
to reach the Menard 1, and on the
scoring play Hammons carried the
ball voer. The kick for extra
point was good, giving the Llano
Jackets a 7-0 lead.
Menard barely got the feel of
the ball after the kick-off when
a pass went sour and short gains
forced them to punt. Allen Rode
took Leggett’s kick on his 15 and
returned to the 26. Llano drew a
holding penalty, but Cleburne Si-
mon made good the loss by com-
pleting a pass to Jack Frazier
which was good for 15. Clawson
and Jerry Rogers gained a first
down at scrimmage, and Clawson
was thrown for a two-yard loss as
the period ended.
Second Quarter
Two passes from Simon to Ham-
mons were batted down, and
Hammons punted to Leggett on
the 20, the Menard back racing
back to the 27. Leggett made a
short gain on a keeper, and Ellis
circled right end for 7 and a first
down before he was nailed by
Jerry Rogers. Castleberry gained
five, and then Leggett rounded
end and raced 19 yards to the
Llano 43 before he was chased
out of bounds Leggett, the can-
ny Menard quarterback, pulled a
trick out of his bag on the next
play as he faked a hand-off to
Ellis, kept the ball and charged
through the Llano team for 43
yards and a touchdown. Ellis ran
the conversion for two points to
give Menard an 8 to 7 lead and
change the complexion of the
game.
Clawson took Leggett’s kickoff
on the 20 and returned to his
31, but Menard drew an offside
penalty, and on the second kick
off, Smith returned to his 35.
Hammons was clobbered in the
backfield for a slight loss, and
the Llano Jackets drew an illegaal
procedure penalty on the next
play A long pass intended for
Hammons or James Slaughter was
broken up, and Roger Howard
punted to the Menard 25, hut
Garrison brought the hall hack
to his 40 Castleberry and Pope
gained a first down at the line,
and after three ineffective tries'
at the line. Leggett made a first
down on the Llano 43 before Ro-
gers nabbed him Two plays later
Allen Rode intercepted Leggett’s
pass on the Llano 28 to break up
a possible scoring threat. Claw- i
son raced 10 yards to tthe 38, and
a pass from Simon to Frazier
was incomplete. On the next play
Simon connected on a long pass |
to Hammons that gained 45 yards,
and Menard drew a holding pen
alty that put Llano in business
on the Menard 25 Clauson gain
' ed the 20, and with only seconds
! left before the half, Hammons;
tried a field goal which was
j blocked.
Both bands entertained at the |
halftime intermission, with the
| Llano Yellow-jacket band under ,
j the direction of T. A. Short fca j
i turing a series of tricky forma
• tions depicting the well-known \
i "droodles.”
Third Quarter
Leggett returned Smith's kick
off to his 30, and Leggett worked
an option play, a keeper and a lat-
eral for 14 yards. Pope hit the
middle for 5 but Menard drew a
penalty for illegal procedure.
j Menard then worked another
tricky play to perfection when
, Leggett passed to Murray, who
: lateraled to Pope for 17 yards.
| Castleberry picked up 8, and El-
lis rounded end for 15 to the
I Llano 20 where Billy Click re-
j covered a Menard fumble to stop
I the drive.
Clawson and Hammonds drove
i for a first down, and Hammons
and Smith made another in two
plays. Llano, however, drew a
holding penalty two plays later,
and then Joe Speck of Menard
I intercepted a long pass from Si-
j mon on the Menard 40. Just to
he fair about the matter, though,
Leggett heaved a pass on the next
play, which Allen Rode gathered
in for Llano Llano tried a couple
of passes that didn’t click, and !
i Hammons punted to the Menard :
1 30, Leggett returning 10 yards.
| After a couple of tries at the
line, Menard got a drive going, j
when Leggett circled left end on
a keeper for 17 before Rode nail- ;
ed him Castleberry gained 5, and j
Leggett tore off 8 through the
middle On th0 next play, Leg-
gett kept the ball and then pitch
ed out to Ellis, who raced 17 !
i yards to the Llano 7.
Fourth Quarter
A fumble in the backfield cost
Menard 18 yards, but Leggett cir .
i ded end for 20 to more than off |
set the loss and then passed to
Ellis for a touchdown. Leggett

more nice gains to reach the Me-
nard 35, and Hammons took a
lateral to the 23 before he was
run out of bounds. Smith and
Hammons made it a first on the
9-yard line, and Smith carried to
the 6. Simon passed to Frazier
for Llano’s last touchdown Ham
mons’ attempt to run the conver-
sion failed, and Menard held a
lead of 16-13.
Menard made three short gains
but a penalty for delay left them
far short of a first down, and it
was here that Llano made one of
the most spectacular defensive
plays of the game when Leggett
faked a punt and tried to run on
a keeper. Jack Frazier broke
through the line, chased Leggett
around in the backfield until he
downed him before he reached
the. line of scrimmage. The ball
went over on the Menard 30. j
Smith ran to the 18. and Ham-
