Cowboys to host Bucs
By DENNEH. FREEMAN
AP Sports Writer
IRVING, Texas (AP) - The
unbeaten Tampa Bay Buc-
caneers and the unraveling
Dallas Cowboys meet at Texas
Stadium Sunday under cir-
cumstances entirely different
from Oct. 2, 1977.
The Cowboys whipped
Tampa Bay 23-7 that day and
went on to the Super Bowl. The
expansion Buccaneers even-
tually lost every game they
played.
Now the Bucs of Coach John
McKay have gone from ‘‘worst
to first” like the cover on their
media guide says.
And the Cowboys are
somewhere in the twilight zone
after looking like gold in a 17-3
victory over Washington and
fool’s gold in a 41-20 loss to
Denver.
The defending National
Conference Central division
champion Bucs have flashed
little offense in victories over
Cincinnati and Los Angeles but
their defense, No. 1 in the
National Football League in
1979, has been solid.
The defending NFC East
champion Cowboys paralyzed
Washington’s offense then saw
Denver gain ground as if Coach
Tom Landry only had nine
players on the field.
The Bucs were rated six-
point underdogs by the odd-
smakers, who apparently have
taken note of the loss of three
defensive starters.
Nose tackle Randy Crowder
is out for the season with a
damaged knee; inside
linebacker Dewey Selmon
aggravated a groin muscle;
and free safety Cedric Brown
pulled a hamstring muscle.
“Randy probably was
playing the best football of his
career,” said McKay, who has
replaced Crowder with David
Logan.
Whether Selmon or Brown
play was questionable.
The offensive line is also
giving McKay some worrisome
moments although quarterback
Doug Williams has pulled out
victories in the last two minutes
on a touchdown pass with 1:45
to play against Cincinnati and a
touchdown run with 57 seconds
to go against Los Angeles.
"Doug has helped us with his
running in both games,” said
McKay. “It’s senseless for the
quarterback not to move when
you have the opportunity.
“Scrambling bothers a
defense and straightens out a
pass rush and really isn’t too
dangerous if the quarterback is
intelligent about it. I don’t know
how many times Roger
Staubach used it to help Dallas
over the years.”
McKay added,“I realize we
were somewhat fortunate to
win the Los Angeles game but I
will take 14 more just like it.”
Landry said,“I think we will
know more about our team
after Sunday’s (3 p.m.) game.
We’re somewhere in between
the Washington win and the
Denver loss.”
