KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia
(AP) — Secretary of State
Edmund S. Muskie, fresh from
a NATO meeting that
demanded total Soviet with-
drawal from Afghanistan,
today promised increased U.S.
military aid to Thailand to
counter attacks by Vietnamese
forces across the Thai-
Cambodian frontier, Thailand’s
foreign minister said.
Siddhi Savatsila told
reporters Muskie made the
pledge when the two men met
today, prior to Muskie’s talks
with all five foreign ministers of
the Association of Southeast
Asian Nations, or ASEAN.
He said Muskie expressed
deep corjpern over Vietnamese
attacks on Thailand.
‘He has come with quick
response of increased military
aid and prompt delivery,”
Siddhi said. “I appreciate this
support.”
There was no immediate
comment from Muskie on the
arms pledge and there was no
indication what types of hard-
ware were involved.
On his arrival in Malaysia
today, Muskie immediately
lashed out at Vietnam’s
"ongoing aggression” in
Cambodia and its strike into
Thailand.
“This attack not only violates
Thai territorial integrity and
threatens its security, it may
HEATHCLIFF
represent an expansion of the
conflict and exacerbates the
suffering of the Thai and Khmer,
people,” Muskie told reporters.
Thousands of Thai villagers
and Cambodian refugees have
fled the border region in the
face of ground and artillery,
attacks by Cambodian-based
Vietnamese forces. The of-
fensive, which began Monday,
apparently is aimed at crushing
resistance to the Cambodian
regime by anti-government
Cambodian guerrillas based
along the Thai-Cambodian
frontier.
Muskie will have a receptive
audience ii| the pro-Western
ASEAN foreign ministers, who
voted unanimously Thursday to
“strongly condemn” the Soviet
presence in Afghanistan and the
intervention of pro-Soviet
Vietnam in Cambodia.
Referring to the Afghan and
Cambodian interventions,
Muskie said, “We are here to
cooperate in ASEAN’s efforts to
seek just, lasting and peaceful
solutions to these problems.
“We are here to reinforce our
appreciation for the support
which the ASEAN countries
have given to the efforts to let
the Soviet Union know that the
Afghanistan aggression is
unacceptable.
“We are here to express our
views that the Vietnamese
incursion into Thailand is a

Rotary club briefed
on nutrition, health
A balanced diet is a key to
good health, a Tyler-based
nutritionist told the Rotary Club
Thursday.
Betty Pinkerton, nutrition
consultant for the Dairy
Council, Inc., presented the
basic foods in four groups. They
were milk, meat, fruit-
vegetable and grain.
“In order to have good health
you need a balanced diet,” she
said. “You need to eat from all
of these groups. Don’t leave any
of them out."
The speaker termed age, sex
and heredity as key factors
determining heart conditions
that cannot be influenced.
Those that can include stress,
exercise, body weight, diet and
smoking.
Miss Pinkerton cautioned her
listeners against trying to lose
weight too rapidly, pointing out
that after an excessively severe
diet removes water from the
body, loss of essential tissue
often follows.
She cautioned that all dietary
and related claims should be
examined with extreme care.
“You can’t cure any disease
with a nutrient,” she added.
Dr. Alfred Glaess reported on
a recent district Rotary
meeting in Mineola.
David Alexander, who will
become club president next
Thursday, read program
assignments for July.

dangerous threat to peace. And
I am here to learn more of the
facts about this incursion
because we care deeply about
the stability and national in-
dependence in this area,” he
said.
Vietnamese troops first in-
vaded Cambodia in December
1978 and toppled Premier Pol
Pot’s government one month
later. Pol Pot loyalists have
continued fighting the pro-
Vietnamese Cambodian regime
from bases , on the Thai-
Cambodian frontier.
During his two-day stay in
Malaysia, Muskie will also hold
talks with the foreign ministers
of Japan, Australia, New
Zealand and Canada, who are
here, like him, for their annual
“dialogue” with the ASEAN
foreign ministers. Muskie will
also meet with Malaysian
Prime Minister Hussein Onn.

West’s two-spade opener
was one of those weak two
bids. It got past North and
East with no stir of interest,
but gave South a problem
South’s eyes bugged out as
he counted his 24 high-card
points. He thought of all sorts
of slam action, but couldn’t
find any better bid than three
notrump
West opened the queen of
spades. Dummy came down
and South remarked ”We
didn’t miss a slam." The he
proceeded to win that first
spade with no further ado
His lead to trick two was a
trifle slower. He finally
picked a diamond East took
his ace and led back a spade
and South’s goose was cooked
He had to let West in with the
ace of clubs.
“I never guess right” was
his complaint.
You can all see where South
went wrong. It wasn't the bad
luck or a bad guess, but rather
his failure to think before
playing to the first trick. t
He should let West hold that
first trick If West held both
aces the play would not help
South But as long as West
held just one it didn’t make
any difference which suit
