Doctor's firm stand
on Darvon justified
ftyJOEORAEDON
Q - I’m a bit peeved at my
doctor. He used to phone in a
Darvon (propoxyphene)
prescription to my pharmacy
whenever I asked for one and I
could usually get it refilled
three or four tones. Now he
says I have to cone into the
office for him to write a
prescription, and I can’t get any
refills.
I feel insulted. Does he think
I’m some kind of drug addict, or
is there some government
reason for his sudden change?
A - Your doctor deserves
credit instead of criticism. The
Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) has recently recom-
mended that physicians write
“no refill” on propoxyphene
prescriptions to cut down on the
potential for overuse and abuse.
Darvon and other
propoxyphene pain relievers
have been a leading cause of
drug-related deaths in this
country. With alcohol or
tranquilizers or used in excess
these analgesics can be lethal.
To deal with this problem, a
patient package insert (PPI)
which discusses precautions
and warnings has been
developed but pharmacists
have been reluctant to supply it.
In a recent survey carried out
by the FDA only 7 out of 152
propoxyphene prescriptions
filled included the voluntary
PPI brochure.
Your physician is not trying
to insult you or imply that you
are a "drug addict.” He is only
following the FDA’s
suggestions with the hopes of
reducing the unintentional
misuse of a potentially
dangerous pain reliever.
Q - I’ve noticed that some
brands of baby shampoo hurt
my toddler’s eyes, while others
don’t. I hate to waste money on
a brand that stings. Is there any
way to tell from the list of
ingredients which ones are
gentle and which aren’t?
A - In finding the answer to
this question, we discovered to
our amazement that there are
no federal regulations gover-
ning the formulation of baby
shampoo. That means a
manufacturer can label its
product as gentle and safe for
babies regardless of ingredients
of actual mildness.
A spokesman for Johnson and
Johnson, a leading manufac-
turer of baby shampoo, noted
that some of their competitors’
products “are sufficiently
irritating to be classified in the
same category as industrial
floor cleaners.” Johnson and
Johnson recently filed a petition
with the FDA requesting that
standards be adopted for baby
shampoos but so far no action
has been taken.
Without such regulations
there is no sure way for con-
sumers to tell in advance how
mild a shampoo really will be.
To be on the safe side try
diluting the baby shampoo with
A - Really good perfume
often contains bergamot oil,
sandalwood, lavender or oils of
citron. These ingredients
sensitize the skin to the sun’s
rays and can lead to a severe
bum.
Perfumes are not the only
potential danger for unwary
sunbathers. Many oral
medications may make the skin
more susceptible to bum.

water — one part shampoo to
two parts water You may have
to use a little more but that is
worth it if you can avoid
irritation. And once you’ve
found a brand that is safe for
your child, stick with it. Here is
one instance where buying by
brand name may be worth the
extra expense.
Q - For my birthday last
week I was given a bottle of
perfume. I love the scent, but
after sunbathing for only a
short time my skin was burned
red wherever I’d applied the
perfume. How could it make my
skin bum like that?
Anyone taking antidepressants,
major tranquilizers, an-
tihistamines, birth control pills,
diuretics, diabetes drugs, or
antibiotics should take special
precautions either to avoid the
sun or use an effective sun-
screen.
If you want to continue to use
your new perfume and still
enjoy the sun you could put it on
your hair and clothes instead of
your skin. The fragrance might
be weaker but you should
escape a sunburn.

Medicaid scrap
nears showdown
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -
Former Attorney General John
Hill says he will urge the State
Board on Monday to end the
fighting over Texas’ $400
million-a-year Medicaid
contract by giving it to H. Ross
Perot.
"I do expect to make a
presentation, particularly
about the underlying merits of
the case — what is in the best
internets of the taxpayers,”
said Hill, who lost a race for
governor in 1978 and now
handles some of Perot's legal
business.
Hill said he advised Perot to
visit each of the three board
members after they voted July
15 to give the contract to
Bradford National Corp. of
New York City.
Department of Human
Resources staff members and
consultants said Bradford's bid
was $20 million to $50 million
cheaper than Perot’s.
Perot made the visits, and
the board reopened the con-
tract on July 29. It will hold a
public hearing Monday
Bradford’s chairman, Peter
Del Col, said he would sue if the
board gives the contract to
Perot’s National Heritage
Insurance Co. Del Col says
Perot violated the Texas Ad-
ministrative Procedure Act in
visiting the board members.
“The Administrative
Procedure Act does not apply in
this instance," Hill said.
Bradford ran full-page
newspaper ads today com-
plaining of Perot's activities
and the board’s backtracking
on the contract.
