Wayne gets scared:
Gilda Radner for lunch
One thing is certain — it
wasn't because ae is late John
Wayne’s handsome son that
Patrick Wayne landed in
Monaco as the host of the lav-
ish new “The Monte Carlo
Show” being syndicated
around the country on major
television outlets starting the
week of Sept 14. Neither was
it his track record as a movie
and television actor in such
releases as “Sinbad and the
Eye of the Tiger” and the grit-
ty “Last Hurrah.”
In truth, Patrick doesn’t
know why he was chosen. Pro-
ducer Marty Pasetta and his
team screened 400 candidates
before finding Patrick.
This show, with a resident
company of dancers and
imported celebrity guests
(Cher, Glen Campbell, Mac
Davis...), is being filmed live
at the Sporting Club in Mona-
co (owned by Prince Rainier,
who also owns a chunk of the
show) before what the genial
Patrick calls, “Definitely a
chi-chi audience every night...
90 percent of them beautifully
dressed, including very
serious jewelry.”
It’s Patrick’s first black-tie,
glamour assignment. Yet, he
thought, the first show was icy
water. “Not because I was all
gussied-up. But because I
thought the audience — this is
a handsome supper club room
that holds 1500 people — was
hostile and indifferent. It
wasn’t them. By the end of the
show they were warm, appre-
ciative. It was me. It was my
first time working before a
live audience, and I was
nervous. Since then it’s been
fine. And, for me it was the
right thing at the right time.
My agent got the call for me
to audition for this while 1 was
doing the ’Shirley’ series (with
Shirley Jones).”
“Shirley” went down the
drain fast This time Patrick
is sure of 24 weeks this year
and he’s hoping for a renewal
and a follow-up trip next year
to the pleasure principality.
Once upon a time (and
you’ve beard this story before)
a producer named David Mer-
rick planned a stage musical
version of Truman Capote’s
“Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”
Through no fault of its stars,
Mary Tyler Moore and Rich-
ard Chamberlain, who was
trying to kick his image as a
youthful intern (“Dr.
Kildare”), it was cancelled
before its New York prem-
iere. Bad luck, yes ... but only
momentarily Each of the
young stars was labeled a
good sport, interviewed wide-
ly and cheered on by the press
Patrick Wayne
and got into a succession of
such good jobs that they are
now hailed as major stars.
Chamberlain's fortune has
long since changed, and his
good luck is spreading to
NBC
How come? Well, before the
actors’ strike shut down pro-
duction for the fall season, the
12-hour miniseries (starting
date, September 15) “Shogun."
with Chamberlain as an
Englishman who became a
Japanese samurai, was
already completed Addition-
ally, later in the month, the
miniseries “Centennial" star-
ring him — along with Robert
Conrad and others — is due to
be reprised.
In case you didn’t hear Greg
Evigan break the news on a
Merv Griffin show, he and his
wife Pam expect their first
child in March. Pam also
expects to keep working ... but
that poses no problems. Her
office is at home. She was a
successful agent-manager
when she met Greg. After
they married, she dropped her
other clients to concentrate on
furthering his career, which
includes recording albums in
addition to-his “B.J. and the
Bear” series.
Broadway stardom is a
goal. It’s also a luxury.
Nobody said it better than
Fannie Flagg a few months
back when she took on the
female lead in “The Best Lit-
tle Whorehouse in Texas.” “If
it weren’t for the money we
make in television, most of us
couldn't afford to take time
out for Broadway,” she says.
This fall, TV’s newest defec-
tor is Gilda Radner who
talked director Mike Nichols
into hiring her when she heard
he was looking for a Gilda-
type for “Lunch Hour” by
Jean Kerr due to open in New
York next month.
