“ROCK IS A youthful music — music made by young people for young people," says St-year-
old Paul Collins (second from right), the leader, singer and songwriter of The Beat. "If rock
is going to be all it can, jit has to stay young and energetic. That’s what we try to do."
Is mouthwash harmful
DEAR DR LAMB I’m a
20-year-old female and have
been using a strong
mouthwash for several years.
I rarely gargle hut simply
rinse my mouth with it after
much about even with the best
use of toothbrush, dental floss
and other home devices.
Then, bad breath may also
occur from the tongue. That's
why it’s very important for
HEALTH
Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
brushing my teeth ! got into
this habit while I had braces
on and now I like the clean
feeling. I was wondering if it
will do any harm to mv taste
buds or tissues over a period
of time. I usually only have
the mouthwash in my mouth
about 30 to 60 seconds for
rinsing it out. Also what do
you think about those new
tongue cleaners’’
DEAR READER - I don't
believe it will do you any
harm although I don't think it
will do you much good cither,
particularly if you don't have
any bad breath problems
1 would like to point out
that mouthwashes only tend
to mask the odors that origi
nate from the mouth itself
There are many causes for
bad breath. Some cases arc
caused by dental problems
and that's why a person with
bad breath always should
have a good complete dental
evaluation. There may be an
infection around the roots of
the teeth that you can’t do
people to clean the tongue
every day just the same as
they brush their teeth There
are some new tongue cleaners
that have been advocated, but
probably the best tongue
cleaner of all is a little tooth-
paste and a toothbrush.
You can brush the surface
of the tongue at the same time
that you brush your teeth and
it won t hurt it a bit Our
tongue is pretty tough. If you
don’t clean off the tongue, the
accumulated food particles
and secretions can be a major
source of odor You'd be
surprised how many people
don't know that it's important
to clean the tongue
To give you an overall con-
cept of the many different
causes of bad breath, I'm
sending you The'Health Letter
number 9-4, Halitosis: The
Breath Problem and What to
Do about It Other readers
who want this issue can send
75 cents with a long, stamped,
self-addressed envelope for it.

As The Health Letter I'm
sending you explains, you can
even have bad breaUTorigina-
ting from the lungs. That’s
really how a person has an
alcohol breath. Those alcohol
odors are coming out of the
bloodstream and into the air
that you breathe out of the
lungs. That’s why a breath
analysis test works to deter-
mine what your blood alcohol
level really is
DEAR DR LAMB My
father is constantly chiding
me for eating lemons with
salt as he says that they will
strip the enamel off your
teeth. Are there any benefits
to be gained from eating lem-
ons other than the vitamin C
aspect?
DEAR READER - I
presume the one benefit you
get is the enjoyment you must
have from eating that many
lemons. Their biggest value
really is their vitamin C. They
don’t contain a lot of calories
and they’re not going to strip
the enamel off your teeth or
cause you any other medical
problems.

The light side
Make Lunch, Not War
OTTAWA (AP) - There’s
peace at last between the
Rhinoceros party and
Belgium, but the treaty
luncheon was so tasty that
the Rhinos plan to make war
more often.
The two sides signed a
treaty over lunch Wed-
nesday at the Belgian ami-
bassador’s residence.
The Rhinoceros, an official
political party created to
make fun of politics, had
threatened war against
Belgium after a Belgian
comic book carried a story
about a hunter Tin-Tin
blowing up a rhinoceros —
the animal, not the party
The problem was that
Cornelius, a rhinoceros who
lives in the Granby, Quebec,
zoo, claimed the victim in
the cartoon was his grand-
mother Elizabeth, according
to Francois Yo Gourd, the
Rhino party leader.
The Rhinos demanded two
cases of Belgian beer and a
box of mussels from Belgium
in reparation,
Belgian Ambassador
Charles Kerremans made
amends by inviting eight
Rhinos to a luncheon of
mussels, washed down with
champagne, wine and
cognac.
'Hie Belgians also gave the
Rhinos a case of beer and
mussels, while the Rhinos
presented ttie ambassador
with Rhino T-shirts, buttons
and pictures of Cornelius,
Cynthia Alexander is listed
as a patient in Gaston
Episcopal Hospital in Dallas
where she is undergoing tests.

DEAR DR BLaKER - 1

boyfriend, but my mother
savs I am too young

since 1 graduated from high
school and can’t see why I
should listen to her now I
have my own apartment and
am completely self-sufficient
DEAR DR, BLAKER -
Give me one good reason why
I should choose medicine as a
career
My father insists that I
become a doctor, but t am
dead-set against it. 1 am poor
in math and science And I
can t stand the sight of blood
DEAR DR BLAKER -
Everyone says I should put
my mother in a nursing home,
but 1 think I should keep her
with me *
She isn’t that much trouble,
and I would miss the compan-
ionship if she were gone
Besides, I feel I owe her this
after all stye did for me when I
was growing up
What possibilities have I
discarded’’ On what basis did
I do so’’
How do the choices I am
still considering fit with my
values?

DEAR READERS - I
advise all those who have dif-
ficulty making personal deci-
sions to memorize the follow-
ing considerations. You will
then have a guide for making
responsible choices:
I. The decision and its
importance:
What decision am 1 trying
to make?
What impact will it have on
mv future"
Will it have an impact on
others'1 Who" How’
l. .Value*:--.
What valued are involved in
this decision" Which of them
are important to me?
Do any of my possible solu-
tions conflict with my values"
If so, how?
What are my priorities"
3 Information:
What information do I have
regarding this decision? What
is relevant" What is irrele-
vant?
What information do f still
need? Where can I get it"
What sources have I used in
the past to help me make
decisions"
4. Choices:
What were the initial solu-
tions among which I had to
decide? What choices did I
add through brainstorming
with a friend or on my own?
How much risk is involved?
What kind of risk taker am 1?, '
What would be the worst
possible outcome of each
choice" How likely is it that
the worst will happen" How
would I respond if it did" How
could I prepare myself for
that possibility"
6. Action:
Now that I have made my
decision, who or what could
help me in carrying it out"
Which of my strengths can I
use"
What obstacles might
arise? How might 1 deal with
them?
What skills or information
do I still need?
All of us must make deci-
sions every day of our lives.
Be prepared to handle yours
responsibly.
