If not a loser
what is she?
By ROBERT WALLACE, Ed.D.
Copley News Service
Dr. Wallace: Normally I think your advice Is sound even ‘
though I don’t always agree with you. However, one of your
answers made me so mad that I just had to write. I’m
referring to your answer to a 14-year-old girl. You told her
not to see a 17-year-old boy because he smoked pot, drank
booze and was a loser.
I'm a 17-year-old female who smokes pot, snorts cocaine,
drinks, sleeps with guys, sneaks out of the house and tells
lies to my parents if I think it will get me out of trouble.
In school I have an A average, have been accepted at a
college, hold down a job, play in a band, have lots of friends
and get along with my family. I resent your implication that
all people who smoke pot and drink booze are losers. —
Christy, San Diego. Calif.
Christy: You might not be a loser but how would you
classify a girl who admittedly smokes, snorts, drinks,
sneaks, lies and sleeps with guys?
Dr. Wallace: I have a word of encouragement for Alicia
who wrote to you about her interest in becoming a
professional musician. I had a similar desire. However, my
parents weren’t discouraging me like Alicia’s are.
I always bad a strong desire to play music professionally.
I used to attend a lot of dances but I wanted to be up there
on the bandstand playing, knowing I was doing something to
bring enjoyment to others.
In my senior year in high school, I met some other teens
who shared my interest. We got a little group together and
would Jam at my house several days a week. It was great
experience for all of us but I was discouraged because we
didn’t get any bookings.
After I graduated and the group broke up, I almost gave
up on the idea of ever bcoming a professional musician. It’s
twice as bard for a girl to break into the field. I still let
people know, however, that I played bass and was interest-
ed in joining a band,
A year went by and nothing happened. Then one night I
got a call from a man who played In a well-known local
band. He had heard about me and was looking for a bass
player. I jammed with them one night and joined the group.
Since then we have played for wedding receptions, rodeo
dances, club dances, parties, Cattlemen’s Association danc-
es, etc....
We only play two or three times a month but that’s all I
want. Alicia, you should plan to get a steady job to fall back
on when getting started, but once you break into the field
and set your goal as to how far you want to go, the sky’s the
limit. I hope you won’t give up on pursuing a career in
music. Set your goals and you will achieve them! — Patty,
Colorado Springs, Colo.
Patty: Thanks for taking time to share your experience.
I, too, am a firm believer in “desire makes things come*
true.’’

DEAR DR. LAMB - I read
in your column about the per-
son who had muscle spasms of
the esophagus. I’ve been told
that’s what I have. It only
hurts during the spasm but it’s
because of it,
People who have frequent
problems with spasm of the
esophagus should have an
examination to see if there is
any underlying disease that
HEALTH
Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
real bad then. 1 would like to
know what causes people to
have these spasms and what
can you do about them.
DEAR READER — I guess
they're a bit like muscle
cramps in the legs. You can
get one spontaneously for no
apparent reason. It’s very
similar except you’re talking
about muscles that form the
muscular tube of the eso-
phagus (food tube).
There are certain things
that will irritate the eso-
phagus and seem to contribute
to the occurance of the
spasms. One of these is a leak
of acid material from the
stomach backwards into the
lower esophagus. This can
occur with a hiatal hernia
(hernia of part of the stomach
through the diaphragm) or it
can occur in people who do
not have a hiatal hernia. This
can also cause burning pain at
the pit of the stomach, just at
the tip of the breastbone. In
fact, some people can develop
ulcers in the lower esophagus
can be corrected. General
measures are usually directed
toward decreasing stomach
acidity because of the prob-
lems that I’ve mentioned.
It is possible to decrease
the attacks in some people by
eliminating cigarettes, coffee,
tea, colas and any substance
known to cause digestive
disturbances. Of course, if a
hiatal hernia is present, then
following the routine that is
listed in The Health Letter
I’m sending you helps to
decrease the problem.
Some attacks of esophageal
spasm are associated with
nervous tension. If a person
has frequent attacks, some-
times the doctor prescribes
medicine that helps to prevent
spasms as well as antacids.
DEAR DR LAMB - Could
you kindly explain what tri-
glycerides are in terms a lay
person can understand. My
recent physical showed that
the triglycerides level had
increased from 146 to 333 in
two-and-a-half years. My doc-
tor tried to explain it to me
but I didn’t understand My
blood pressure was 150 over
78 and I’m 5 feet 7 and weigh
165 pounds. I’m 70 years old
DEAR READER - Trigly-
ceride is a chemical name for
fat. Most of the body fat you
have underneath your skin is
in the form of triglycerides.
So whenever you hear the
word triglyceride just think of
fat. Triglycerides tend to be
higher in the blood of people
who are overweight. Since fat
is absorbed directly into your
circulation after eating, your
blood fat level will be higher
immediately after a fatty
meal. That’s why the trigly-
ceride test is of little value
unless it’s done in a person
who has been fasting over-
night.

Having second thoughts
DEAR DR BLAKER - 1
have been going steadily with
a woman for more than a
year She is 32 years old, and
wants children
Lately she has been talking
about getting married Every
time she brings it up, I feel
annqyed. I find these feelings
strange since I was the one
who started the discussions
several months ago
1 know that I have been
very busy with examinations.
1 attend law schoolat night
and have only one year to go
before graduation
In addition, I have to deal
with some important dead-
lines during my daytime job
as a city planner
Can these unrelated pres-
sures alter my feelings about
mv girl?
DEAR READER - As I
see it, this is the scenario:
You were fefeling good
a.wut your relationship. As a
result, you began talking
about marriage and children.
The light side
Indian Elephant Heads
To Paraguay Thanks
To Japanese Children
NEW YORK (AP)-When
Hanako the elephant could
no longer stand because of a
bone disease, she was not
forgotten by the people who
had seen her at zoos in
Japan.
Hundreds of Japanese
schoolchildren raised 840,000
to send the 18-year-old In-
dian elephant to Paraguay in
hopes the warm climate
would help her condition.
Hanako, whose name
means flower In Japanese,
was flown here with two 6-
month-old pachyderms for
company and stayed
overnight Sunday before
heading to I>atin America.
“She’s just like somebody
who has painful arthritis,”
said Don Sapanara, a han-
dler with the American
Association for the
Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals. “The heat is good
for them. It warms the bones
and makes them feel bet-
ter.”
df all goes well, the
elephant, which has suffered
the rickets-like disease since
birth, might be able to walk
again, he said. Such
elephants live an average of
60 to 75 years.
She liked the discussions —
at least in part because she is
under real biological pressure
to decide about children as
soon as possible She began to
make plans
Then you came under a lot
of pressure at work and at
school. Her need to talk about
the future became an added
pressure »
You pulled back Interpret-
ing this as ambivalence about
your feelings for her, she
became anxious about her
future and pressed harder for
reassurance You reacted by
feeling even more pressured
If you two let this scenario
play itself out, you will proba-
bly separate in confusion and
anger If. on the other hand,
you recognize the dynamics of
this interaction, you may be
able to save the relationship.
Explain to your girlfriend
about the pressures you are
under at work and at school.
Indicate that you are not
trying to get out of the rela-
tionship but that you find it
difficult to discuss long-range
plans when your everyday life
is so chaotic.
It would also be helpful if
you could give her some idea
of when you might be more
receptive to the discussions.,If
a school vacation is on the
horizon, that could help the
situation.
There might be another
issue involved, however, since
you are nearing the end of the
term and have only one year
of law school left And this
issue might be complicating
your feelings about your girl-
friend.
Y6u are in a transition peri-
od of your life. You are work-
ing in your old job but are cer-
tain by now that you wjll
finish law school and become
a lawyer.
That means your life will
probably change drastically
within the year. You will no
doubt get another job. You
may even leave town
With all these insecurities
about the future, you may find
that you are reticent to make
any decisions at all right now
- even about the woman you
love.
