Parents punish her
for sister’s mistake
By ROBERT WALLACE. Ed.D.
Copley News Service •- .
Dr. Wallace: My older sister became pregnant about six
months ago and she is not married. Now my parents are
treating me as though I’m going to do the same thing. I used
to have a boyfriend but not anymore. I am not allowed to
socialize with boys for any reason whatsoever.
I’m almost If and this restriction has really hurt me
emotionally. I keep talking to my parents and the answer is
always, the same, “No boys.” Now that school is out lor the
summer, I feel like running away. Can you please help
me?— Belinda. San Mateo, Calif.
Belinda: Your parents are being totally unrealistic. They... ■
don’t realize it but they are doing much more harm than
good. Since your words have fallen on deaf ears, you need
outside help Contact your minister-clergyman, family
doctor, or a trusted adult relative and have them relay the
word to your parents.
I will never understand why parents punish one teen for
another teen's misdoings.
Dr. Wallace: I'm a 12-year-old girl and I hang around with
four other close friends. About three weeks ago, one of my
friends started cursing. Now another one of my friends is
doing the same thing.
The other two girls and I talked it over and we don't like
his language one bit. We talked to the other two girls (the
cursers) and told them how we feel but they only laughed.
What should we do? — Darcy, Dubuque, Iowa
Darcy: Drop these girls from this “group.” Since they
choose to use language that is no acceptable by you and the
other two girls, they also choose to be left alone. Always
leave the door open for their return if they? clean up their
vocabulary.
Dr. Wallace: The letter from Alice in Merced, Calif., who
disliked taking piano lessons brought back some very
unpleasant memories. My mother started my piano lessons
when I was 3 years old. For the next 12 years I suffered
through these lessons. The day we moved from Battle
Creek, Mich., to Alabama was the happiest day of my life —
no more piano lessons. The money my parents spent for
these lessons was totally wasted. My mother told me that
one day I would appreciate the lessons but to this day, I
despise them. — Virginia, Florence, Ala.
Florence: Parents have the responsibility to introduce
their children to the arts. After the introduction, it’s up to
the child to get actively involved. After a reasonable
introduction, the child should not be forced to perform or he
or she could end up with your attitude and lots of wasted
money.
Shopping for bank services
By LOU IVY JOHNSON
County Extension Agent
Comparison shop carefully to
find which type of checking
account best suits your needs.
Many financial institutions —
commercial banks, savings
banks, savings and loan
associations and credit unions
— may soon offer interest-
bearing checking accounts or
something akin to checkwriting
privileges on savings accounts
if pending regulations are
approved. Therefore, consider
the potential costs and benefits
of various Checking account or
bill-paying options.
Among the factors to .com-
pare in selecting an account
are:
What is the monthly service
charge and-or check-
transaction charge?
What is the amount of the
monthly balance (minimum or
average) that must be main-
tained to avoid a service
charge?
What is the price range for
checks?
What are the overdraft and
stop-payment charges?
Is postage-paid banking by
mail available?
What is the rate of interest
and method of interest com-
putation for interest-bearing"
accounts?
Now, compare some of the
checking-account options
available:
Minimum-balance account —
requires the consumer to
maintain a minimum balance
in exchange for “free
checking.” If the balance is not
maintained, the financial in-
stitution can impose a service
charge, if the consumer must
withdraw, money from a
savings account to maintain the
“minimum”, interest from that
account will be lost.
Average-balance account —
similar to minimum-balance
Municipal employees put
strike squeeze on cities
By The.Associated'Press
Detroit struggled ihto its
second day of a city workers
strike with bus mechanics
Joining the walkout today and
leaving more than 200,000
people without their usual
means of transportation. \
At the same time, negotiators
in New York City worked
around-the-clock to avert a
strike that 44,000 uniformed
workers have overwhelmingly
authorized for Thursday.
And the strike involving
39,000 workers in the nation’s
copper industry spread to a
seventh company in the two-
day-old dispute.
' The decision by the 200
Detroit bus mechanics forced
officials to pull the city’s 1,600
buses off the roads early this
morning. Officials say ap-
proximately 220,000 ride the
buses daily.
Mayor Coleman Young called
on the strikers to end their
“attempt to bring the city to its
knees” on the eve of the
Republican National Con-
vention, which begins July 14.
The city was to go into
federal court today, seeking a
back-to-work order against 500
striking workers at Detroit’s
sewage treatment plant. No
other court action was planned
against the strikers, said city
negotiator Mark Ulciny on
Tuesday.
In New York, the coalition

account — has average mon-
thly requirements. This type of
checking can favor those with
substantial deposits at the
beginning of the monthly
checking account cycle and
heavy out-go near the end of the
monthly account cycle.
Free checking — is becoming
rarer due to the increased cost
servicing checking accounts.
The “free checking” has no
strings attached like minimum
or average balances or per
chefck charges.
Per-check plan — usually
assesses a small service charge
for each check* that is written.
This type of checking favors
those maintaining low balances
and who write a few checks
each month,“‘and is often
referred to as “dime a time” or
“student plan.”
Flat fee package — for a set
fee ($2 to $5 per month
typically) other services
besides checking — such as
travelers checks, money or-
ders, safe deposit boxes — may
be provided.
No-bounce account — the
bank deposits money into an.
account1 if theTKafance falls
below zero. This deposit is
really a loan for which you
must pay a finance charge.
Overdraft account — if you
overdraw your checking ac-
count, the bank transfers
money automatically from
your savings account in the
same bank to cover the over-
draft. Since it is a transfer, not
a loan, no finance charge is
assessed. There may, however,
be a service charge.
Automatic transfer account
— all deposits are made to a
savings account with a zero
checking balance maintained.
When a check is written, funds
are automatically transferred
from savings to checking.
Money kept in the savings
account continues to earn in-
terest. Automatic transfers
were authorized by the Federal
Reserve Board in November
1978, but not all commercial
banks offer this type of ac-
count-.
Share-draft accounts — some
credit unions offer savings
accounts on which check-like
drafts can be written while
savings continue to accrue
interest.
Electronic funds transfer
systems — some savings and
loan associations offer bill-
paying systems. They will pay
your bills from savings account
funds and send periodic
statements summarizing ac-
tivity, ' eaj-nings posted and
service charges assessed.
Some savings and loans now
place electronic terminals in
retail stores that allow con-
sumers to withdraw cash and
use it to pay for purchases at
those stores. Of course, not all
communities offer all these
options.
