A cop-out to blame
problems on parents
By ROBERT WALLACE, Ed.D.
Copley News Service
Dr. Wallace: I am 16 and overweight and I know my
problem Is psychological. I spent many agonizing years
with my parents during my childhood. My mother was a
battered wife and my father an alcoholic. (Things are better
now with them.) J
My escape during this horrible time was to overeat. Now I
can lose weight but I can’t keep it off because my parents
are a constant reminder of my nightmare.
I realize that I need help but I don't know what. Can you
help me? — M.S., Mount Pleasant, Texas
M S.: Professional guidance and assistance would be the
best solution but, naturally, this involves finances.
You can help yourself if you set goals and really want to
solve the problem. Give yourself a reward every day that
you stay on your diet.
Always remwn, ber that you and only you are responsible
for your actiorcs. You cannot blame what your parents did
for your overeating. If you do, it’s a cop-out and deep down,
you know It.
When you set your goals and rewards, please write to me
and let me know what they are
Dr. Wallace: I have started to write to you several times
but each time I became confused and never finished the
letter. I hope fcan finish this time.
During my senior year In high school I was really into
drugs (mostly pot and speed) and alcohol. I was into this
stuff because I didn’t want to graduate. I didn’t want to
leave my friends and trusted teachers. I was afraid to face
my future.
But now I have solved my problem.
I realize that life is like a treasure box. What you put in it
Is what you get out of It. Every time I see someone with a
frown on his face, I beam a smile and try to cheer him up.
I am presently attending a community college and have
made many new friends. I’m a new person and still pray to
God, but now I thank Him for lie is now my master.
, 1 know you can’t print every letter that you receive but I
! feel so much better for putting my thoughts on paper. —
F.E., San Mateo, Calif.
F.E.; Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
Dr. Wallace: I’m a 15-year-old guv and I’m confused. Last
week I had a really neat dream that I fell in love with a
beautiful girl. Now, all I can think of Is this girl.
I know it’s silly but I feel stupid thinking about a girl who
does not exist. Please tell me I’m normal. — Brian,
■ Worland, Wyo.
Brian. You are normal and I might add, very fortunate
Your dream was much better than the nightmares so many
• have.
Before long, a cute mortal Worland female will make you
forget all about your "dream girl ” In the meantime, enjoy

DEAR READER — Your
children s interference is par-
tially vour fault It was not a
good idea a seem apologetic
when you knew they would be
concerned about your deci-
sion
After all, you are alone
because they are away at
college I'm sure they feel
somewhat guilty and don’t
want you rushing into any-
thing - motivated solely by
loneliness
You said, however, that you
are in love Stress that when
you talk to your children and
they may begin to accept the
situation
