Rh negative baby possible
THE NEWS-TELEGRAM, Sulphur Springs, Taxos, Wednesday, May 7‘ 1980-SECTION l-:3.
DEAR DR. LAMB-I wish
you would clarify the differ-
ence between Rh positive and
Rh negative parents. Isn’t it
true that two Rh positive par-
ents can have an Rh negative
child’’ Both my husband and I
are Rh positive and we have
an Rh negative daughter 1
baby is Rh positive. It is true
that if both parents are Rh
"'■negative then they will have
only Rh negative children.
It’s rather complicated but
here’s the explanation. We
have two genes that deter-
mine whether we’re Rh posi-
tive or Rh negative. The Rh
HEALTH
Lawrence E. Lamb, M.D.
wouldn’t want either my
daughter or my husband to
think I had been unfaithful.
DEAR READER - You’re
absolutely right and you can
rest easy. However, if an Rh
positive mother under these
circumstances should have an
Rh negative baby it will not
cause the typical Rh problems
that are usually discussed.
That occurs only when the
mother is Rh negative and the
positive gene is big D. The Rh
negative gene is little d If
both genes are big D (DD)
such a person is homozygous
Rh positive type. If both genes
are little d (dd) that person is
homozygous Rh negative.
Now what if a person has one
big D gene and one little d
gene (Dd)? That person still
types out as Rh positive
(called heterozygous Rh
positive).
If both parents are hetero-
zygous (Dd), the laws of
chance say that one out of
four of their offsprings will
have a pair of big Ds (DD), one
will have paired little ds (dd)
and two will be heterozygous
(Dd).
If both genes in both par-
ents are positive (DD), all of
their offspring will be Rh
positive But if both parents
are Rh negative (dd), both
genes in all of the children
will be little d genes and all
the children will be Rh nega-
tive.
To give you information on
the common blood types, I am
sending you The Health Letter

Blood types and subgroups
such as Rh have been used to
determine paternity — at
least to prove that someone
could not be the father or .the
fnother of a specific child. In
more recent times, tissue typ-
ing as for organ transplants
haS been greatly perfected.
These sophisticated methods
are far superior to blood types
in determining paternity
whenever that is an issue.
DEAR DR LAMB - What
causes itching before, during
and after urination Ms there a ,
cure and what is the treat-
ment?
DEAR READER - It’s a
symptom. You might as well
ask what causes part of the
skin to itch There can be a
local inflammation that’s irri-
tated by the urine. That may
be from mechanical factors or
from an infection. Some wom-
en are prone to have yeast
infections, particularly if
they're diabetic, and this can
cause a maddening itch. 1
would suggest that anyone
who has such a symptom
should have an examination to
see if there is any local prob-
lem that deserves treatment

The truth about
premarital sex
By ROBERT WALLACE, Ed:D.
Copley News Service
Dr. Wallace: 1 would like to commend you for your
answer to Karla when you told her that sex without
marriage Is wrong.
I’m sure you must have received many letters telling you
that you are old-fashioned, but I think it’s great to see
someone with the guts to speak the truth about premarital
sex.
I’m 21 and my boyfriend is 21 and we have been dating for
four years and are waiting until we finish college before we
get married.
We have never had sex nor will we until we are married
and we have a beautiful, loving relationship. — Sandy,
Anaheim, Calif.
Sandy: You are right. I did get quite a few letters telling
me that my moral code was archaic, but I’m happy to say
many more letters were received from teens who agreed
with me, many writing to say thanks for putting it in print.
Dr. Wallace: I am a 17-year-old girl who Is in love with a
22-year-old guy who is in the proces of getting his secoad
divorce.
My parents are against our relationship and want me to
stop seeing him.
In a few months, I will be living on my own and my
parents won’t have any say in who I see. My question is
what should I do until that time? — Bo, Nashua, N.H.
Bo: Let’s face it. You are only talking about 60 days and
you know dam well that you are going to continue seeing
this guy regardless what your parents say.
To answer your question, spend as much time as possible
with your parents because it appears you won’t be seeing
that much of them in a few months.
Dr. Wallace: I’m 15 and my boyfriend, who happens to
smoke pot and drink booze, Is 17. My parents don’t like him
because of this and the fact that be is a high school dropout.
Just because my sister married his brother my parents
act like I’m going to marry him.
I’d like to have him stop smoking pot but I don’t mind if
he drinks a little. What bothers me is my parents don’t want
me to see this boy anymore. What do you think I should do?
— Betty, Klamath Falls, Ore.
Betty: I’m not trying to give you a “smart-aleck” answer
when I tell you to listen to what your parents are saying.
The smoking pot and drinking booze routine shows me
that he is immature and irresponsible and very foolish.

Those little white lies
DEAR DR BLAKER - .1
have been telling “little white
lies” all my life But during
the past year I have made a
concerted" effort to stop.
At first, I didn’t even notice
when I told a lie. The habit
was so automatic that many
half-truths and distortions just
popped out of my mouth.
I knew I had made progress
when I could identify lies as I
was telling them as well as
after the fact. That gave me a
chance to correct them right
then and there.
I feel good about my
improvement
DEAR READER — Con-
gratulations on your step for-
ward in self-awareness.
But you must take one more
step before you can have true
freedom of choice: You must
be able to detect when you are
about to tell a falsehood.
This sense of anticipation
will give you even more free-
dom to change your behavior
in whatever direction you
desire.
DEAR DR BLAKER - I
am an overworked working
mother.
All the magazines advise
getting your husband to help
with the housework. That
seems to be out of the ques-
tion in my case.
It makes me very angry to
think of all those other hus-
bands doing their share while
I carry such a burden. It just
doesn’t seem fair!
DEAR READER — Before
you choke on your anger (or
choke your husband), consider
these statistics. Things
haven’t changed as much as
you might have expected.
—Although almost half of
all Americans believe tnat
marriage partners should
share the tasks of
breadwinner and homemaker.

surveys show that married,
working mothers do up to four
times as, much housework as
married, working fathers.
— Husbands of working
mothers do no more house-
work than husbands of full-
time homemakers. •
—After working at their
full-time jobs, the average
husband puts in an hour and a
half of housework and child
care, while the wife puts in at
least six hours.
These statistics don’t make
your lot in life any fairer But
it’s important for you to real-
ize that your husband is not
alone in his resistance to tak-
ing on "woman’s work."
What changes can you
expect in your sexual per-
formance as you grow older?
