The British International
Popular Bridge has produced
a really fascinating article
The hero claims that he won
20.000 pounds playing bridge
'(gambling winnings are not
taxable in England) and is
asked to show how he could
play that well
Here is his first hand The
normal play is for West to
lead out three rounds of clubs
after East signals come-on by
playing the nine at trick one
East ruffs the third club and
later on South finesses his
queen of trumps to take the
rest of the tricks „
Dr. Manch explains that he
defeated the contract by play-
ing the deuce of clubs at trick
one, whereupon West shifted
to a heart South won and
decided to use the well-known
trump safety play of laying
down the ace.
All agreed that this play
would be made under the
circumstances The doctor’s
opponent then went back to
dummy with a diamond and
led a trump. The doctor rose
with the king, led his nine of
clubs and then made his last
trump when West led another
club in desperation.
The skill shown in this hand
could indeed account for
10.000 pounds of the claimed
winnings.

Advice from girl
who's been there
Dear Ann Landers: I ain
begging you, for the sake of
every teenage girl who is in-
volved in sex, to please print
this letter. I wish I had seen one
like it four years ago. It might
have saved me a lot of hear-
tache. i
Three weeks ago I ted my
second abortion. I am 18 years
old. I had my first abortion
when I was 15. After the first
one, I swore I would never take
another chance on getting
pregnant. But I was young and
dumb. After a few months I was
back to the same old tricks.
When I think of how foolish I
said, “I am having a good time.
This woman is my bluebird of
happiness.”
What can be done to make
him see the light? — Concerned
Deedee
Dear D.: Nothing. If Gramps
has been going with “Bluebird”
for six months, he has already
seen her bill. So butt out, Toots.
If he makes a mistake he’ll
have to pay for it.
Dear Ann Landers: My wife
“Wanda” decided to go back to
work when our youngest child
started in school two years ago.

want to give some. I wish every
girl who is fooling around —
trusting to luck that she won’t
get pregnant — could spend one
hour inside an abortion clinic. It
is the most depressing place in
the world — at least it was for
me and every girl I spoke to
* there.
Pregnancies can be
prevented. They don’t have to
happen. All it takes is the time
and trouble to get yourself
informed. If you don’t have a
Planned Parenthood
Association in your town, go to
the nearest city that has one
and get the information you
need. It is free and confidential
and can save you a bucket of
tears. That’s what I did, and I
will never be in trouble again.
I’m signing this — teamed The
Hard Way
Dear Learned: You’ve
written a dynamite letter.
Thank you. The address for the
national headquarters of
Planned Parenthood, for those
who want a list of the cities that
have an association, is Planned
Parenthood Federation of
America, Inc., 810 7th Ave. New
York, N.Y. 10019.
Dear Ann Landers: My
grandfather is 76 years old.
Grandma died last year after a
long illness. About six months
ago Grandpa started taking out
a woman in her 40s. She is
divorced and everyone in town
knows she is after his money.
test night I had a talk with
Grandpa and told him what I
though of his “romance.” He
predominantly male.
Some evenings she gets home
an hour or so late and says she
had extra work to do. test
month she worked two Satur-
days. Last night her boss
phoned during the evening to
ask a question about business.
When I made some remarks
about my suspicions, she of-
fered to take a lie-detector test.
Are they 100 percent accurate?
— Need To Know In Jackson
Dear Jack: No. A few years
ago the New York Psychiatric
Institute wanted to test the
validity of lie-detector tests.
They performed an experiment.
Several employees volunteered
as subjects. Each subject was
supplied with a lie and was
offered a cash reward if they
could stay with the lie and
register “normal” on the highly
sophisticated equipment. Seven
out of 10 subjects stayed with
the lie and collected. So, draw
your own conclusions.
Are you, or is someone you
care about messing around with
drugs — or considering it? Are
all drugs bad? What about pot
— in moderation? Ann tenders’
new booklet, “Straight Dope on
Drugs” separates the facts
from the fiction. For each
booklet ordered, send a dollar,
plus a long, self-addressed,
stamped envelope (28 cents
postage) to Ann Landers, P.O.

THE AGE OF MKR0NKS IS HERE WITH
A 32 CPM DESKTOP COPIER
In the beginning. Canon
invented the first real alternative
to Xerox. The NP Rain Paper
process.
With copies so crisp and
clean, soon other major compa
nies adopted the patent.
Then Canon went beyond.
Into a whole new world called
micronics-a combination of
space age engineenng, elec
tronics, and optical innovations
that take full advantage of the
micro-computer.
In the field of desktop copiers,
the NP-80 will compete with any
machine in its class. Especially
against the Xerox 3400.
Canon is taster than the
3400.
In warm up time, first copy
speed and overall speed.
In fact, at 32 copies per mm
ute, it is one of (he fastest
machines in its class.
It will copy anything you give
it. Unlike Xerox, which is unable
to copy blue well.
Most important, the Canon
NP80 is reliable.
With solid-state microncs and
Canon engineering, you can
depend on copy after copy. Year
after year.
Yes, there is another world.
Beyond X. Beyond Y. Beyond Z.
But not beyond your means.
The Canon NP-80.

SMITH GILLEY STANDS
WITH THE FARMERS
■ ■■
■r~:Ej—
"Let’s face it. The family farmer is
in worse trouble today than ever.
Unless strong legislative action is
taken, we are going to see the
almost total elimination of the
family farms in our lifetime.”
Smith Gilley
Since 1970 almost 500,000 American farmers have been forced out of business, and foreign investors have increas-
ed their direct holdings of American farmland to 6,000,000 acres.
Smith Gilley has worked to help the family farmer. He believes that farmers are America’s most vital resource. They
need the support of their legislators in Austin and in Washington. SMITH GILLEY has been giving them that sup-
port.
What Smith Gilley
Has Supported:
What Smith Gilley
Will Support:
•Foreign Milk Imports:
Sponsored and passed legislation
prohibitive against the purchase of
foreign milk by State agencies.
•Foreign Beef Imports:
Sponsored and passed legislation
prohibitive against the purchase of
foreign beef by State agencies.
•Farm and Ranch Tax Relief.
Voted to tax agricultural land on the
basis of productivity so farm taxes could
be kept low.
•Homestead Exemption:
Voted^against attempt by Austin lob-
by to eliminate Homestead Exemption
this last session.
•Gasohol:
Voted to appropriate money to ex-
pand research on the development of
gasohol.
•Family Farm Security Act:
Voted for low-cost loan programs so
that the next generation of family
farmers can afford to buy farmland.
•Inheritance Tax Exemption:
Voted to raise inheritance tax ex-
emption so that a family would not have
to sell their farm to pay inheritance taxes
when the head of the household dies.
•Foreign Land Sales:
We need laws to restrict the sale of
agricultural land to foreigners. Gilley
supported this legislation last session,
but the Austin lobby defeated it.
•Fuel Allocation:
Family farmers should have priority
in the allocation of diesel fuel and Gilley
will work to see that this happens.
•Gasohol:
Production should move ahead as
quickly as possible, and special interest
legislation that restricts the small pro-
ducer of alcohol for fuel should be
abolished/
•Taxes:
Family farms should receive every
tax break that is possible for the state to
give.
•Extension of Homestead Exemptions:
The Homestead Exemption should be
extended to the full two hundred acres
for family farms.
This is Smith Gilley’s record and program for the family farmer.
"Let’s Keep
SMITH GILLEY
Working For Us In Austin.”
