Scouts hold honor court

PTA fine arts
winners named
The local Parents Teachers
Association has announced the
city wide winners of the 1979-80
National P£A Fine Arts
Project. Students were asked to
submit creative works dealing
with the theme, “Behind the
Gates of Tomorrow..”.
The purpose of the com-
petition is to encourage
creative expression among
children and youth in the form
of visual arts, literature and
music, local sponsors say.
Projects were judged on
“evidence of creative ability
and expression of theme,"
according to the general in-
formation and rules packet.
Each of the Sulphur Springs
Schools with a PTA competed.
There is no PTA group at the
high school. Age categories
^include ppimary, grades! to 3;
intermediate, ’grades'4 to 6; and
junior high, grades 7 to 9. First
place winners in each division
and grade category have
earned the chance at further
competition at District III in
Tyler.
The winners selected from
the over 200 entries in the visual
arts category are as follows:

original scores and com-
positions contest of the music
division, and judges said the
musical entries were their most
difficult to evaluate. The
winners in the music com-
petition are:
—Primary: Kim Lewis,
Lamar School, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Ronnie Lewis.
— Intermediate: John
Pickett, Travis School, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Kirby Pickett.
Pickett composed and per-
formed. Barbara Taylor, piano
teacher, put the music into
manuscript form.
Winners of the District III
competition will be announced
Feb. 15, with district champs
advancing to state competition
in mid-March.
Boy Scout Troop 66 sponsored
by the Sulphur Springs Jay cess
held its quarterly Court of
Honor Monday in the council
room at the Municipal Building.
Scout Jeff Janey led the group
in the pledge to the flagltpr the
opening ceremony.

Award recently presented to the
troop was on display.

Speech students nab awards
For the third timifyn as many tournameid.s,
Sulphur Springs High School speerifaml
drama students have won honors and praise
for their achievements. The local students
competed against 18 other schools at the
Paris High School Speech and Drama
Festival, Jan. 24.
The students, coached by Karen Mclntire,
received superior ratings in each of the 10
contest categories entered. In seven events,
the students placed in finalist competition and
won first places in two of these events.
Grant White was the tournament winner in
the standard oratory competition. The high
school senior and spn of Mr. and Mrs. Tommy
White entered the finals with a perfect rating.
He presented a selection of speeches by
Winston Churchill.
Sophomore Lena Williams received a top
tournament position with her dramatic
selection of “Soul Gone Home," by Langstqp .i
Hughes. The daughter of Mrs. Fronia
Williams had maintained her superior rank
for dramatic interpretation throughout the
festival.
Debaters Mike Kelty, son of Mr., and Mrs.
Tim Kelty, and Butch Burney, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Bobby Burney, qualified for the finals
competition with a perfect 4-0 record, but lost
in the last round of the finals.
Each of the following students placed in the
final rounds of his or her event:
Wyvette Harper, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Billy Edd Harper, and Kevin Clayton, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Clayton, placed in duet
acting. Paul Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Cleotho Miller, competed in prose and Debbie
Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Foy
Williams, qualified for persuasive speaking.
Perry Hawkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Hawkins, placed in informative speaking.
Of the 21 students who competed in in-
dividual competiton at the Paris festival, 16
received “superior ratings," Four students
rated “excellent," and there was one "good"
rating.
Mrs. Mclntire said the students are now
busy preparing for the upcoming University
Interscholastic league speech and drama
contest to be held in April in Atlanta, Ga.
