Opening lead:4 10
By Oswald Jacoby
and Alan Sontag
Today’s hand is taken from
Amalya Kears's translation of
"Bridge Analysis” by Jose Le
Dentu
This hand shows a defensive
problem. We start with the
opening lead. It should be one
of the unbid suits, but which
one? A heart lead will beat
the slam if East holds the ace
of hearts and South doesn't
have a singleton.
In view of the bidding, it is
reasonable to assume that if
South does not hold the ace of
hearts he will have a single-
ton. South would not use
Blackwood if he had two quick
losers in an unbid suit. So,
West opens the 10 of clubs.
East takes his ace and must
lead something back.
He abandons the idea of a
club. South would not have bid
the slam if he couldn’t win the
first or second club lead.
The heart return is very
tempting, but East knows that
Soutn holds the ace of hearts
and East is looking at those
six good diamonds in dummy.
Finally, East sees one faint
hope If South has just one
diamond, a diamond lead may
cut his lines of communica-
tion He leads a diamond and
there is no way for South to
avoid another loser
Note that six notrump by
South was unbeatable No one
could get a ruff against that
contract.

Scripture Reading for Today: I Corinthians 16:1-11
THE POWER OF ENCOURAGEMENT
.. . without ceasing I have remembrance of thee in my
prayers .... being mindful of thy tears. 2 Timothy 1:3,4
THESE words were addressed to Timothy when lie was
I in need of special encouragement Apparently the
young preacher had been grieving over the many dif-
ficulties he had encountered. Earlier the apostle Paul had
told the carnal Corinthian'' not to make Timothy fearful,
nor to minimize his potential because he was young. He
wrote, "Lot no man, therefore, despise him” (I Cor 16 11)
In othei words he said, "He needs your support, not your
criticism.” Paul also reassured Timothy by referring to the
godly heritage and the gifts of the Spirit which were his.
We, like the apostle, should also give others an encourag-
ing word
As a boy, Sir Walter Scott was left weak and lame by a
severe attack of fever. Some misjudged him and thought
he would never amount to much When he became a
teenager, he visited in a home where some famous lit
erary guests were being entertained, including the poet
Robert Burns In one room was a picture under which
was written a beautiful bit of verse. Burns asked who wrote
it, but no one seemed to know. Timidly, Scott gave the
author's name and quoted the rest of the poem Burns
was delighted. Laying his hand on the young fellow’s head,
he exclaimed, "Ah, my boy, I'm sure you'll be a great man
in Scotland someday!" From that hour, Walter Scott was
a changed person. That brief conversation set him On the
road to greatness.
We never know what encouragement can do. Ask your-
self, "Is there a heartening word I could give someone to
spur him on to bigger and better things?" —H.G.B.
Has a burdened soul been lifted
Over what you did or said?
Dries someone whose hopes were fading
Now with courage look ahead? , —Anon.

Coasts, cars, a new house. For
the most part we have been
comfortable, happy and
healthy. But a serious
disagreement has come up. My
wife has announced that she
does not want to have any
children.
I the past she always said,
“Wait until we graduate from
college” — or, ‘‘Let’s travel
while we are young” — or,
“Let’s save money for the new
house.” Well we’ve done all
that.
She reached her decision not
to have children without
discussing it with me. When I
suggested counseling she said,
“It would be a waste of time.”
I don’t know what to do. I
have been very patient and
have tried to get her to change
her mind, but she won’t budge.

Getting An Ulcer In Buffalo
Dear Buffalo: Sorry to be a
crepe-hanger, but it sounds to
me as if your marriage has had
it. If you pressure your wife
into having children she doesn’t
want, your home will become a
battleground. If, on the other
hand, she denies you the
fulfillment of having a family,
you will grow increasingly
resentful.
You have a right to insist on
joint counseling. If she
staunchly refuses, your best
weapon is your hat. Put it on
your head and walk out.
Dear Ann Landers: I want to
thank you for telling off that so-
called polite society person who
said: “Leftoversare for dogs.”
(She signed herself,
“Nauseated in Mt. Vernon.”)
A dog in this country eats
better than most people in
every country I have visited.
Some of them would be happy
to eat what my dog eats. They
could at least stay alive.
People like me can’t finish
half the food they serve in
restaurants. So what’s wrong
with bringing home what I paid
for? Or, when children can’t eat
everything on their plates, why
is it bad manners to finish it off
instead of letting it go to the
garbage can?
Keep up the good work, Ann.

The officials said Justice

have severely curtailed INS
investigations have com-

They said among restrictions
was a ban on agents searching
business for illegal aliens, a
rule put into effect to encourage

Casillas said the guidelines

“Nobody is concerned about

Castillas lamented. “We are

DEAR POLLY — My light gray furniture has become
discolored from using furniture wax. How can I remove
this old wax’1 — MRS. A.B.
DEAR MR. A.B. — For removing old wax you might
try a solution of one tablespoon of turpentine and a
tablespoon of olive oil in one quart of warm water. Mix
well and use a cloth wrung out of this to rub briskly over
the furniture. Repeat until excess is removed and the
surface clean. Dry with another soft cloth, and when
completely dry put on a thin coat of paste wax and rub
to a shine. Go easy on the wax after this. Of course, this,
as any suggested remedy, should be tested on an incon-
spicious area of the furniture. — POLLY
