Exercise to feel warm
THE NEWS-TELEGRAM, Sulphur Springs, Texas, Sunday, Jan. 20, 1980—SECTION 1—3.
DEAR dr lamb - rm a
32-year-old female and work
in a very large office with
many employees. I'm
extremely cold during the
winter months. The heat is set
low anyway to help save on
energy I wear three pairs of
knee briefs and several layers
of clothes. I’m miserable.
Most of the others seem O K
while my fingernails have
turned blue and my hands are
like ice to touch
I quit smoking three years
ago and I don’t take any medi-
cine. I’Ve had a recent blood
test for a thyroid problem but
it was negative My doctor
gives me the impression that
most of it is in my head I'm
as comfortable inklde during
winter as outside. 1 just can’t
face being so miserable since
most of the day is spent at
work, I’d do anything to warm
up if someone would just give
me some ideas,
DEAR READER -
Whether you feel hot or cold
doesn't have an awful lot to do
with your body temperature.
That's why one person can sit
in a warm room and feel cold
and the other person will feel
hot You're living proof of this
observation
The reason is because the
sensation of feeling hot or
coldJs dependent upon nerve
receptors which are in the
skin. These respond to the
blood flow through the skin
itself
rZ health
LaWrence E. Lamb, M.D.
Frequently the difference in
whether a person feels hot or
cold is directly related to the
blood flow through the skin
which can be independent of
the circulation in the rest of
the body As a result, if you
don’t have very much blood
flow through the skin, you will
feel cold
A good hot bath will .usually
make such a person feel
warm again for two reasons
One, it will decrease the
body’s ability to lose heat so
there will be a build up of heat
in the body. And the external
heat to the skin causes an
increased blood flow to the
skin.
Now what can you do to
improve the blood flow
through your skin? Stopping
smoking was a good idea The
other thing you might do is to
start a regular exercise
program. As. the body heat
builds up from exercise, the
circulation to the skin increas-
es to eliminate the heat. That,
in turn, makes you feel warm.
So every time you feel a little
cold, if you have an opportuni-
ty to do a little exercise some-

where it will help you begin tu
feel warm. ’
There’s a reason why peo-
ple shiver when they’re cold.
It’s nature's way of generat-
ing heat from muscular con-
traction to warm the body
And if you warm the body
with exercise, it will have to
give off heat and it will do it
through the skin warming it
and making you feel better
To give you a better appre-
ciation of how body tempera-
ture is regulated and how this
affects the sensation of being
hot or cold, I am sending you

There isn’t a housewife in this world who does not
like to play “Musical Furniture.” It has to be the
challenge of adding a table, subtracting a chair,
rearranging a piano, or angling a sofa tha adds a little
spice to the daily, humdrum chores.
No one has to teach a woman how to play it. She’s
born knowing how. I know, even as a child, I found
that by moving my tricycle from the back porch
where it was stored to the center of the living room,
my Daddy could do three flips in mid-air, touch the
ceiling with his knees, ana end i}p in a reverse
wishbone in the doorway.
Men do not appreciate the game. Maybe it’s
because they’re not good at it. Bill Miligan in Fair-
port, N.Y., even put his feelings into a parody of
“Home on the Range.” »
A home is so strange where the furniture plays,
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the shins grow more lumpy each day.
How often at night do I stumble and fight,
With that chair rearranged yesterday,
When loudly is heard that disparaging word,
As I kick that chair out of my way.”
My husband is not nearly as poetic about it as Bill.
He is struck with the absurdity of the game. Why is it
a woman cannot lift a grocery bag of garbage from
beside the sink to the garbage can by the door — yet
can move a 2,000 pound freezer from the utility, room
to the garage? How come a woman cannot maneuver
a simple hook and eye on the back of a blouse, yet can
guide a piano through two doorways to come to rest in
a niche by the bookcase?
The other night I said, “I bought new pillows today
and you know what?
He dropped his paper. “Tell me you’re not going to
play Musical Furniture again.”
“You’re right. I’m not going to play Musical Fur-
niture. WE are! I want the sofa bed brought out of the
den because it matches the pillows, the living room
sofa goes into the hallway while the bookcases will
have to go on the opposite wall which will, of course,
necessitate moving the TV set and the antenna. Oh,
and come with me into the bathroom. Do you know
that tub has been in the same spot for 20 years?”

School nurse can
help abused friend
By ROBERT WALLACE, Ed.D.
Copley News Service
Dr. Wallace: Please, please answer my letter In the
newspaper. My good friend is being physically abused by
his parents. He has told me things they have done to him,
and I'm shocked (1 can see Hbe bruises and cuts). It’s
getting worse but he is afraid to tell anyone and doesn't
want me to do anything, but 1 feel I should. Hurry, please
write your answer. — Tom, Colorado Springs, Colo.
Tom: Go to your school nurse and share with her your
friend’s physical condition. She will know what to do. School
nurses rank with the best, in educational circles. If you are
not fortunate to have a’nurse at your school, talk-to your
principal. .
Dr: Wallace: I’m a 13-year-old girl who is very confused.
At school, I really like a certain teacher and I want to go out
with him even though I know that he Is married.
I know this sounds stupid but that's how I feel. My friends
think that I’m crazy but I think I love him. He Is so cute and
foxy. — C.R., Columbus, Ohio
C.R.: You're not crazy. Many young ladies have crushes
on a particular male tdacher. But let me assure you that it
is only a crush. Nothing will ever come of your infatuation
except that this teacher probably likes you as a student and
wants you to excel academically.
Dr. Wallace: I’m 17 and have been dating this sweet guy
for almost two years. I’m a junior in high school and he Is 2*
years old and living with his parents. We are engaged and
plan to marry after I graduate.
His family life is very troublesome and his parents are
always throwing him out of the house. He has a job but is
not making enough money to support himself so he can't
move out.
Because of his miserable home life, he says that he wants
to join the Navy. This hurts me because my junior and
senior years should be the two most enjoyable years of my
life and I want my fiance as part of them. I have big plans
for the junior-senior prom and I wouldn't allow anyone, but
him to take me. I need this guy and don’t want him to leave
me. Help! — Jane, Pottstown, Pa.
Jane: It’s clear that your boyfriend must get out on his
own. If he can’t find a male roommate or can’t get a better-.
paying job, then I think the Navy is 3 good choice.
There are programs that will allow him to serve two
years and more importantly, allow him a certain freedom
that he needs at this time.
Send questions to Dr. Robert Watyce, TwEEN 12 and 20,
In care of this newspaper. For Dr. Wallace’s teen booklet,
“Happiness or Despair," please send $1 and a 28-cent,
stamped, large, self-addressed envelope to Dr. Wallace In

BOAT BUILDING COMES naturally to Herbie Addcrley,
who constructed a 42-foot wooden fishing boat at 19 with
no formal training Fifteen years later, Adderley and his
crew of 10 build large fiberglass yachts at their Bermuda
workshop Because of the care Addcrley lakes during every
phase of construction, he has produced only 15 custom-
crafted boats in the last six years.
