Suspect
caught in
wire theft
operation
WINNSBORO - Clayton
Walter Spoon Jr., 42, of Tyler
emerged from a densely
wooded area onto SH-312 ap-
proximately five miles
southeast of here about 1:30
p.m. Tuesday, tried to catch a
ride and shortly thereafter was
arrested by Wood County
Deputies Bill Wansley, Jimmy
Turner and Ken Wisdom on
charges of felony theft.
Thus, 26 hours after it all
started, the manhunt in nor-
theast Wood County ended with
the final arrest of three persons
for Stealing copper wire from
Wood County Electric Co-Op
utility poles.
“He didn’t run this, time,"
said Wood County Sheriff Bill
Edd Jones, “he said he’d had
enough."
The 28-hour manhunt which
included all law enforcement
agencies in Wood County plus
some from adjoining counties
began at If: 15 a.m. Monday
when former Sheriff Arlan Ray
Harris, working as a special
agent for the Wood County
Electric Co-Op, tried to stop a
1978 GMC pickup hauling a load
of copper wire.
The truck wrecked out on a
curve and two men ran from it.
A woman in the truck, Mona
Sue Spoon, 34, of Tyler, was
arrested at the scene and a full-
fledged manhunt was quickly
organized.
At 2:24 p.m. Monday, a 16-
year-old Mount Pleasant
juvenile came out of a field and
was arrested as he attempted to
catch a ride.
The manhunt continued
through the night with lawmen
and electric company em-
ployees riding around the 15-20
mile circumference area in
private vehicles and unmarked
patrol cars.
“We put in a lot of manhours
during the last 26 hours," said
Sheriff Jones shortly after the
capture of Spoon.
Spoon was arraigned on
charges of theft of copper wire
valued in excess of 8200 and less
than 810,000. Bond was set at
840.000.
His ex-wtfe, Mona Spoon, was
arraigned Tuesday afternoon as
well and her bond was set at
825.000.
The youth was turned over to
juvenile authorities, according
to Sheriff Jones,
“Those Co-Op people stayed
with us all night," Jones said.
"We really appreciate the help
from every department in the
county, some out of the county,
the citizens and especially the
Wood County Electric CoOp
employees that were out there
riding the roads all nl^it."
The utility company said its
losses had amounted to ap-
proximately 860,000 as of last
week to replace and repair the
power lines where the copper
wire had been taken.
