‘Stone’: not
big on substance
By David Handler
At the end of the opening
credits of "Stone” our hero
pulls his service revolver,
points it menacingly at an off-
camera culprit and snarls: "If
you don’t, I won’t."
That warning has been
bothering me for weeks.
Sounds great, doesn't it’’ But
what does it mean" If you
don't what, I won t what? If
you don't drop it, I won't
shoot" Hardly
What he must be saying is
”If you don't drop it, I won t
not shoot.” condensed to "If
.you don't. I will."
MMMM
Which makes sense, but
doesn't rhyme So the produc-
ers have opted for a tough
declaration of no apparent
meaning This epitomizes
"Stone," ABCs new cop show
starring Dennis Weaver It's a
slow motion shoot-out
between pretense and
substance. Pretense wins.
I expected something a bit
different from "Stone." but
only because they seemed to
offer something different Our
lead. Dan Stone'; is not only a
hard-boiled police detective
but a successful novelist
(patterned, one must suppose,
after Joseph Wambaugh. who
despite numerous forays in
TV. including "Police Story,"
has had the good taste to
avoid writing something
about his own celebrity).
1 assumed that his novelist’s
perception of people and situ-
ations would influence Stone's
detecting, make him a bit out
of the ordinary. Seemed a safe
assumption — otherwise, why
bother to make him a scrib-
bler in the first place"
But "Stone" is a sham. Dan
Stone does wear turtlenecks
instead of neckties, and does
drive a sub-compact — so he's
a nonconformist and smart
enough to be fuel efficient.
And. at the front and back of
each story, there's 30 seconds
of celebrity shtick — Dan s
harried agent is pressing him
for pages, someone wants him
on "The Mike Douglas Show .”
But they've tried so hard to
portray Dan as a regular guy
— just a cop who goes home
and scribbles in notebooks
instead of mowing the lawn —
that they've ended up neutral-
izing their own gimmick
For the bulk of the hour.
Stone is a routine, hunch-play-
ing. vigilante cop and "Stone
a dreary cop show The fact
that he's a writer is never
integrated into the story or his
detecting. You’d swear he
hatches those books.
Dennis Weaver does not
help matters. Weaver, who
charmed our socks off in
"McCloud." plays Dan Stone
in the lowest key available
Another week Stone is tem-
porarily assigned a woman
partner She doesn't approve
of his books. Neither does his
chief, played by Pat Hingle, a
fine actor who is totally wast-
ed here Why" Because Stone
admits that cops have person-
al problems “We aren't
supermen,” explains Stone.
“Just men and women doing a
job. or trying to. The public
should view us like we are —
warts and all.
Talk is cheap. “Stone” falls
far short of showing us the
warts — particularly short of
“Paris" and "Eischied.” two
promising, thoughtful cop
shows that failed this season
So don’t be fooled like I
was. "Stone" is not what it
appears to be. It’s just a cute
cop show that wants to be
lean and tough instead of cute.
One gets the feeling that the
producers are constantly look-
ing over their shoulders and
saying "We don't want to end
up with another 'Columbo'
here.”
Too bad.
