Glue from spool
By Polly Cramer
POLLY’S PROBLEM
DEAR POLLY — 1 crochet baby booties to sell so I
buy ribbon on 20-yard spools. 1 need to know how to
remove the gli^e from the ends that are fastened with
tape. I have to throw away an inch or so from each bolt
and that makes the last piece of ribbon I cut an inch or
so too short to run through a booti'e. — LILLIAN
DEAR LILLIAN — After spending quite a bit of time
trying to remove the glue from the snip of ribbon you
sent me I decided it was false economy — your time
and mine are worth more than that. You get at least 40
"ties" from a bolt of this ribbon so just cut each one a
fraction of an inch shorter than usual and you have it
made. - POLLY
DEAR POLLY — There is no need to fool around with light-
ed matches, etc. to get a ballpoint pen to write. Stick the point
of the pen into a pencil eraser and turn it a few times and it
will work if there is ink in the pen - BETTY
DEAR POLLY — When my husband started using an elec-
tric razor I saved his old shaving brush and it is wonderful to
use for dusting the many knick-knacks I have around the
house. Great for pictures frames, too. The soft bristles get into
all the corners and it is easy and quick. — ONALEE
DEAR POLLY — When a pin or needle is accidentally
dropped it seems to get lost in shag carpeting. It must be
found or someone could end up with it in a foot, so I keep a
magnet handy and use it for retrieving them. — MRS. G.E.R.
DEAR POLLY — Mrs. C. asked for a way to remove ciga-
rette smoke from her apartment. Burning a kerosene lamp
was suggested by a reader, but I have a better remedy. I burn
a vanilla candle and there is no smoke odor on clothes or in
the house and the vanilla scent is very pleasing.
Also, I keep a piece of plastic wrap between the pages of
my cookbook. It keeps the pages clean while I am using a
recipe and can be moved as needed. - BONNIE

Cruisin' for a bruisin'
Jacobys on Bridge)
DEAR DR BLAKER - I
am a 23-year-old woman who
has been living with a very-
possessive guy for the past six
years. —
I tried to break off with
Jerry a few years ago while 1
was still working. He told me
he would change and did for
about a week
Then he made things very
bad for me again. He finally
caused me to lose my job,
which I had enjoyed very
much.
I would like to work again,
but he wouldn't approve. So, I
guess I'm stuck with nowhere
to go.
I really don’t want to be his
housewife anymore I hate it
when he goes out to have fun
and excludes me
Also, I am attracted to his
friend Stan, who has been to
our apartment several times
We joke together and have a
lot in common. «
I would like to ask Stan out,
but I’m afraid he would think
poorly of me He is kind of
shy.
How can 1 attract and date
Stan while keeping it from
Jerry?
DEAR READER. Forget
it Your problem is that you
are asking the wrong question
Instead of worrying about
how' to attract another man,
concentrate on getting out of
your current relationship
If you donjt leave Jerry-
now, one of two things is like-
ly to happen
- You will find yourself liv-
ing with a man who supports
you while you date other men.
That would be something like
a father-daughter relation-
ship.
- Or Jerry will find out As
possessive as you say he is, he
will throw you out, beat you
up or both
Neither of these outcomes
seems very healthy.
Perhaps you ought to ask
yourself why you can t get out
of this relationship without
asking to get thrown out
It is also likely that by
throwing yourself at Stan you
would ruin his friendship with
Jerry That is a big responsi-
bility to take on, especially
since you are not sure
whether your feelings for Stan
stem from your really being
attracted to him or merely
Once your relationship with
Jerry is really over, you can „
approach anyone who seems
interesting You will be free
and dating again
I realize that your situation
choices
Karen Blaker Ph.D.
from his being the only man
besides Jerry that you have
spent time with recently.
First, get a job. Establish
your independence while you
are still living with Jerry-
Then move out
If you are afraid to be on
your own, you may want to
set up housekeeping with
anotheryoung woman
The point is(that you will be
able to think more clearly
about a new boyfriend if you
are free from your old one
may be more complicated
than you described in vour
letter Feel free to send me

Many causes for fatigue
DEAR DR LAMB I'm 45
years old. 5 feet 1 and weigh
180 pounds. I have seven chil-
dren from 10 to 28 I lost my
husband three years ago and
have a 10-vear-old with
leukemia. He's been in total
remission for three years I
am a high-strung person and
have trouble sleeping most of
the time.
About a year-and-a-half ago
I started having extreme
fatigue. I went to the hospital
and had a complete evalua-
tion with X-rays and every-
thing and was told that all I
had was a slight sinus infec-
tion which couldn’t be the
cause. My blood sugar was
180.
, I was told 1 was in my
menopause and to lose weight,
try to relax and I would be
fine. I asked the doctor for
estrogen since I’d been told
that makes you feel so much
better but he said he would
not recommend it and with
that, I was discharged.
1 am still fatigued and can’t
believe there is not a physical
reason for my condition Some
days it's so bad that I lie down
all day and can't do a thing.
Can you please comment on
what I told you or help me in
any way'.’ I don’t have to-wWtf
since we have a business
which my son runs,
DEAR READER You did
the right thing in having a
complete medical examina-
tion Fatigue oFloss of energy
is a frequent problem In
about 80 percent of the cases
that doctors see for this
complaint, there is no medical
reason fm—'it That means,
however, that in 20 percent
there is a medical cause.
These can run the gamut of
such things as infectious
diseases, diabetes, anemia,
endocrine (glandular) or nutri-
tional problems.
Of course, if there is a dis-
ease present that’s causing
the fatigue, the correct
approach is to try to cure the
disease. If there isn’t any
obvious disease, then you have
to look elsewhere for causes
for fatigue
I’m sending you The Health
Letter number 9-6, Fatigue
Feeling Tired and Weary
You've had a lot of respon-
sibility for a long time and the
stress of this may have con
tributed to your feeling of
fatigue
The other question is how-
much fun you're getting out of
life. People who don’t have
goals and aren’t engaged in
doing something they enjoy
often get tired Part of the
problem is boredom Every-
one needs to be involved with
people, needs to do things that
they enjoy and needs to have
goals to accomplish. You’d be
surprised how much energy a
person can have if she is sud-
denly told that she is going to
be able to make a trip that she
had wanted to make for a long
time or some other pleasant
event enters her life.
Some people actually have
a depression and that’s the
two reason they feel fatigued
These often require profes-
sional help. I’m also sending
you The Health Letter num
ber 10-10, Depression: The
Ups and Downs of Life. Very
frequently both men and
women have mild and some-
times relatively severe
depression in the middle
years. In women there’s a
tendency to attribute these to
the menopause and in men,
it’s even popular to call it the
male menopause

The heart slam is a really
good one. After the diamond
lead, it will make if the spade
finesse is on; if clubs break 3-
3; if a squeeze or end play can
be developed; and, failing all
that, if the defense slips a
trifle
There actually are several
lines of play that will bring it
in despite the actual bad
breaks We rather fancy the
line that Tom Sanders of
Nashville adopted.
He won the diamond with
his ace, played three rounds of
trumps while discarding a
diamond from dummy, cashed
his queen of diamonds and ace
of clubs, led a dub to
dummy’s king, discarded a
club to the king of diamonds
and ruffed a club
Clubs failed to break and as
you can see the spade finesse
was off, but as long as West
held the last diamond the
slam was home
, All Tommy had to do was to
lead a spade and stick in
dummy's nine East topk his
jack and had to lead a spade
right back into dummy's ace-
queen
Note that if West had
played his 10 spot the play of
the queen from dummmy
would have caught East in the
same end play.
