Barrels deadly,
department says
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - The
Texas Health Department has
issued a warning to outdoor
chefs that barrels can be
deadly.
The department said Thur-
sday that Monroe Shepard, 41, a
vocational instructor at Krum,
near Denton, died Jan. 6, two
days after cutting open a barrel
which had contained dangerous
chemicals.
“What’s scary to me is that
FFA (Future Farmers of
America) groups around the
state are making barbecue
barrels as fund-raising
projects. This means that 14-
and 15-year-old kids are out
there cutting up those barrels
every day,” said L. Don
Thurman, regional director for
Environmental and Consumer
Health Protection at Arlington.
The department quoted Dr.
Lloyd White, a forsenic
pathologist, as saying his
autopsy tm Shepard showed he
died of “toxic penumonia.” The
department said Shepard used
a cutting torch on the barrel,
which continued to smoke and
burn after he was through.
Thurman said hundreds of
thousands of barrels are used
daily to ship chemicals. “If
nothing else," he said, “signs
could be put on these containers
saying, ‘Don’t reuse this barrel
for any purpose.' ’’
“I want to warn people to be
very careful about using
barrels for household or school
projects," said Thurman. “The
residuals left in drum-type
containers can be very
damaging."
Before using a barrel for a
project, he said, first check with
the supplier to see what was in
the barrel. If there are still
doubts, he said, contact the
local health department.

Third sex' population
control idea unfounded
Your Astrograph
Bernice Bede Osot
Dear Ann Landers: Although
you take the position that
homosexuals are not “normal
and healthy”, will you consider
another theory? I believe they
are ’a third sex, created by
nature to control the population.
Look at the facts:
Most animals have built-in
controls over reproduction.
Man cannot, and will not,
control his sex drive. By the
sheer weight of numbers,
scientists should come to the
conclusion that homosexuality
is more than perversion
Homosexuals exist in virtually
all cultures and have existed
throughout history.----■-
As you may have guessed, I
am a homosexual. The
homosexuals 1 know, both inen
and women, have many things
in common — which brought me
to this conclusion. None were
seduced when -young, and all
were attracted to members of
their own sex since childhood,
Those who married did so under
pressure- from their families,
and most them are now
divorced.
This may seem silly, but
homosexuals can recognize
each other at a glance. “It takes
one to know one" is true. I
believe this also is part of
nature’s plan. - Name Deleted
by Request
Dear Deleted: There is a
great deal of controversy
among psychiatrists on whether
or not homosexuals are "born”
or “made”. I side with those
who believe they are “made”,
and I don’t mean seduced by
perverts. 1 believe homosexuals
are psychologically conditioned
very early in life. This rules out
the third-sex theory as a
method of population control.
You are right about instant
recognition. 1 have heard this
statement from many
homosexuals, and I believe it is
true.

you do a good job, but I did not

stealing because of something
she had learned in your column.

“teaching people the glory of
honesty and not simply how to
stay out of jail. — J W.H.
Dear J.W.H.: I appreciate
your high-minded position, sir
- but human nature being what
• it is, I am happy if I can teach
them anything at all.
Dear Arte Landers: 1 am a 22-
year-old woman who has been
seeing a 25-year-old man for
nearly three years. We love
each other a lot and neither one
goes with anyone else.
For my birthday , last year I
thought he might surprise me
with an engagement ring, but
instead he bought me a lovely
dress 1 had admired in a shop
window. I am hoping he will buy
me a ring this year, but so far
he hasn't said anything about it.
1 have a hunch money is the
problem, and he is em-
barrassed to admit it.
I have a good job and a nice
nest egg. Should I offer to help
him buy the ring? — The Itch to
Hitch in Pendleton, Ore.
Dear Itch: An engagement
ring needn't be an expensive
rock. Your friend could have
bought you a modest stone last
year for what he paid for the
lovely dress. Don’t offer to
“help him out ” The ring will be
much more meaningful if he

Don’t Blame Your Age
For Poor Hearing
Chicago, 111. — A free oiler of special interest to those
who hear but do not understand words has been an-
nounced by Be.ltone. A non-operating model of the
smallest Beltone aid of its kind will be given absolutely
free to anyone requesting it.
I tue, all hearing problems are not alike.. . . and some
cannot be helped by a hearing aid. But audiologists
report that many can. So, send for this free model now,
and wear it in the privacy of your own home. It is not a
real hearing aid, but it will show you how tiny hearing
help can be. It’s yours to keep, free. The actual aid
weighs less than a third of an ounce, and it’s all at ear"
level, in one unit.
These models are free, so we suggest you write for
yours now. Again, we repeat, there is no cost, and cer-
tainly no obligation. Thousands have already been mail-
ed, so write today to Dept. 32019, Beltone Electronics,
4201 W. Victoria, Chicago, III, 60646.
