about transparency. Like
others, 1 value my eyesight.
Can you tell me something
about this?
DEAR READER - He's
telling you that you have ear-
ly cataracts and was talking
about changes in the lens.
Many people don’t understand
that a cataract is inside the
eye and not on the eye. The
lens is a jelly-like globular
structure inside the eye that
focuses the images that you
see, somewhat like the lens in
the camera focuses for you to
take a picture.
The lens is constantly
regenerating itself just like
the other cells in your body
but it can’t shed the old cells
like your skin does These old
cells are clumped together
and moved to the inside of the
lens. In the early stages of
cataract formation a little
spot of these old clumped
cells develop, This little spot
is sometimes called nuclear
sclerosis.
I’m sending you The Health
Letter number 13-6, Your
Cataracts Are Coming, so that
you can understand better
what happens to the lens as
people get older. It happens to
everybody to some degree.
1 really don’t know why
you’re having trouble with
your vision because there are
many other things that can
affect eyesight other than
cataracts or nuclear sclerosis
or even changes in the lens.
But if you happen to be devel-
oping cataracts and they
affect jour vision to the point
that it can’t be managed with
eye glasses, there’s a strong
likelihood that something can
be done surgically to signifi-
cantly improve your eyesight.
DEAR DR. LAMB - What
is exophthalmic goiter? And
what is Graves disease? Is a
poor life full of stress and fear
a possible cause? I am a 60-
year-old childless woman who
works very, very hard and am
under stress most of the time.
What makes pressure behind
the eyes at night?
DEAR READER — Graves
disease refers to an overac-
tive thyroid condition. It’s
often associated with nervous-
ness, tremulousness, weight
loss in the face of eating lots
of calories and bulging eyes.
The bulging eyes are called
exophthalmos. The goiter
refers to an enlargement of
the thyroid. So you have an
enlarged thyroid gland which

Pot research proves
pushers are wrong
By ROBERT WALLACE, Ed.D.
Copley News Service
Or. Wallace: We are sure that if you looked as hard for
pro-marijuana medical reports as you did for the anti-pot
reports, you would find a study that says the opposite for
every one you listed in a recent column. We thought you’d
be interested to know there is going to be a book published
called ‘With Love from NORML” (National Organization
for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.)
Your reefer madness is starting to get on our nerves.
Tokers are not losers and pot is not evil as the headline to
your column recently screamed out. We take considerable
offense at that.
The millions of pot smokers in the United States and
Canada are having enough trouble with anti-pot and anti-
paraphernalia from all the Art Linklettefs and Carol
Burnetts, so we don’t need Dr. Robert Wallace’s propagan-
da added.
We are doing our best to fight against government
oppression and interference into our private lives. — Love,
peace and pot, Alice and Herb, Columbus, Ohio
Alice and Herb: I cannot condone anything that alters
human behavior. I have looked for pro-marijauna research
but outside of casual mentions of cataract sufferers benefit-
ing from smoking pot, I found none. In fact, no civilized
country on earth has legalized the use of martjauna. But
believe me when I say I will read the book that was
mentioned.
Personally, it’s nice to be mentioned in the same circles
as Carol Burnett and Art Lmkletter. Thank you.
dV Wallace: Please help me. I’m 13 and have a friend
named Mandy. My problem is that she is always pushing
me around.
Last year Mandy bad another friend, Janet, and they
really bossed me. I was afraid of them and did whatever
they told me to do. I was happy when Janet left for another
school but I have found out she is coming back next
September.
Even with Janet gone, when Mandy gets mad at me, I
cry. Then I call her on the phone and beg for her
forgiveness. My nerves are almost shot.
My mother says that I should do something about it.
That’s why I’m writing to you. Can you help me stand up to
Mandy and Janet when she returns? — Chicken, Michigan
City, Ind.
Chicken: These girls are not your friends, never were and
never will be.
Dump Mandy immediately and have nothing whatsoever
to do with her. Having no friends is better than associating
with this bully. People like her must be, pardon the
expression, squashed.
If Mandy or Janet bothers you at all have mother make
an appointment to see the principal. If that doesn’t'
these bullies, have Mother see the superintendent of j

is overactive and associated
eye complications.
The eyes are literally
pushed out of their socket
because of the accumulation
of lymph cells and fluid in the"
tissues behind the eye and in
the muscles that control the .
eyeball itself. The eyes do
need protective measures to
, prevent them from drying out
if the eyelids don’t meet prop-
erly over the protruding
eyeballs
Usually most of eyes' bulg-
ing will recede after the thy-
roid condition has been ade-
quately controlled a sufficient
length of time.
The cause of such overac-
tive thyroid conditions is real-
ly not known. It used to be
thought that it was related tc
stress but that can’t be
proved.

Ticketed Driver Deserts
Bus, Passengers
VENTURA, Calif, i AP) -
A busload of passengers was
left stranded for more than
an hour when their driver
became angry over a
speeding ticket and deserted
them, authorities said.
California Highway
Patrolman Robert
Christiansen stopped the
southbound Greyhound bus
Sunday night along U.S.
Highway 101 after clocking it
at speeds of between 65 mph
and 72 mph, police said.
The driver, George Mayse,
told Christiansen the citation
would probably cost him his
job and said he “was
walking.’’
After signing the citation,
the driver told Christiansen:
“Well, you’ve got another
problem now. You just
bougty yourself a busload of
people. I’m walking omthe
freeway. You can tell them
(the passengers) anything
you want.”
Christiansen notified the
42 passengers and waited
with them for an hour until a
replacement driver arrived
more than an hour later,
police said.

woman must be prepared to

DEAR READER - Thanks
for the statistics to prove my
point.
DEAR DR BLAKER - 1
am so confused that 1 can’t
even think. I’m in my middle
30s and have three children
My problem is that my hus-
band won’t talk to me
anymore It’s not just me,
though He won’t talk to
anyone '
He won’t go anywhere or do
anything. We haven't had sex
for six months.
I used to explain his behav-
ior to friends and sometimes
even tried to talk for him But
now they all know what he is
like They call on nights when
he is working and ask me to
go out with them They feel
sorry for me.
1 don’t know what to do I
love life and I want to be
around people. 1 wonder how I
would get along if I left him I
also worry what my, kids
would think of me.
DEAR READER - And
what will they think of you if
you stay under these circum-
stances’’
Children are not blind. They
see how you are being treated.
It gives them the impression
that you are not doing any-
thing to make life better for
yourself.
Take charge of this situa-
tion and set a good example
for your children.
First, try — if you haven’t
already — to get some profes-
sional help for your husband.
He sounds dreadfully
depressed.
While you are waiting to
see if he warms up to the idea
of counseling, start making
some plans of your own. Pre-
pare yourself for the possibili-
ty of separation by getting
some job training ,and-or ,a„
job.
This may. take six months
or even longer. Remember
that you don't have to leave
right away even if he rejects
help
Finally, - begin to spend
more time with your friends
