Some jump-suit responses
By Oswald Jacoby
and Alan Sontag
The jump-suit response is
what we used to call the
“slam invitational game
force." It suggests a slam
even though you do nothing
further to invite it.
It is one of the few bids that
most experts fail to use to
best advantage. The reason is
that they tend to wait for
hands that practically guaran-
tee a slam before getting
around to using it.
As an example, if partner
opens one spade and you hold
S- 2 H-A KQJ10 5D-AKQJ
C- K 4, you can use Blackwood
and bid seven if partner shows
two aces, six if he shows one
ace and look for a new part-
ner if he shows no aces.
On the other side of the
ledger, we find that the ordi-
nary player uses too many of
these responses As an exam-
ple, he holds: S- A K 8 7 6 H- 2
D- A K 7 4 3 C- Q 6 and
responds two spades to
partner's one-heart opening
Partner rebids three hearts
and suddenly our average
player finds that he has no
satisfactory second bid
A three-spade call would
show a longer suit — a four-
diamond call would by-pass
three notrump — a three-
notrump call might well be
the wrong contract and so on.
With this hand if you
respond one spade and part-
ner rebids to two hearts, you
have an easy and correct
three-diamond rebid. You will
have shown both your suits
without getting past that nice
three-notrump spot which
should be the right contract if
partner bids it over three
diamonds * ,
Next week we will show
proper jump shift responses

Church issues call
for apology to Iran
PITTSBURGH (AP) - The
annual conference of the
Church of the Brethren called
on the U.S. government to
publicly apologize to Iran’s
people “for its complicity in the
repressive policies” of the
former shah.
Delegates claimed .“illegal
actions of the United States in
establishing the reign of the
deposed shah" and also said
Iran’s holding of U.S. hostages
is illegal and called for their

Scripture Reading for Today: 2 Corinthians 4:1-6
SEEING THE LIGHT
For Gbd ... hath shone in our hearts, to give the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God. 2 Corinthians 4 6
I EVER, never will a person begin to comprehend the
HU beauty of the Savior until Cod gives light to his soul
Expecting the unconverted to grasp eternal truth is
like asking one with no vision to appreciate the colors of a
glorious sunset.
I read of a little boy who was born blind, but bis con-
dition could be corrected by delicate surgery. When at
last the operation was performed, he was exposed to light
little by little. Then one day his mother took him by the
hand and led him outdoors, and for the very first time he
saw the skyr"Oh, mother!" be cried, "why didn't you tell
me it was so beautiful?” Her heart overflowed with joy be-
cause her son was discovering a whole new world. She
wept as she replied, "I tried to tell you.-dear, but you
couldn't understand me."
We may talk of the marvelous beauties of our wonderful
Lord, but spiritual blindness pfevents unconverted people
from understanding Divine truth. Their minds have been
darkened by Satan. I have known people who could not
assimilate the elementary facts of our taith. even though
highly educated and schooled in worldly philosophy. On
the other hand, I have experienced the sheer delight of
hearing from the mouths of children such adoration of
Jesus that I immediately sen4ed they were indwelt by
Cod's Spirit. Yes, He must enlighten our hearts and open
our minds if we are to see Christ's loveliness
Friend if you do not know the Savior, you are missing
life's most beautiful reality. Ask God to take away your
spiritual blindness and help you see the Light P.R.V.
• The powers of darkness have blinded the rate,
Closing our eyes to the glories of grace; *
But faith in the Savior will give us new S'8h'.
Flooding our souls with His truth and His light. - D.J.D.
THOT: Spiritual blindness can be cured only by the Great
physician.

Charges filed
in trap death
LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -
Gary Ratcliff has pleaded in-
nocent to a reckless homicide
charge in the death of a
teenager killed by a booby trap
that Ratcliff erected at his
mobile home to foil burglars.
After repeated burglaries in
his Romney home, Ratcliff
loaded a mixture of shot and
rock salt into a shotgun and
rigged it so it would fire if an
intruder opened the front door,
authorities said.
Robert Sullivan, 16, of
Stockwell was killed June 10
when he apparently tried to
jimmy the door to Ratcliff’s
home, police said.

Dear Ann Landers: May I
respectfully suggest that before
you label someone “squirrelly”
you look to see if there is
perhaps another side to the
story?
The woman who wrote said,
“My old goat has been sleeping
in his union suit for 45 years. ”
I’d like to know why she is
raising a fuss now. Did it occur
to her that the man might have
poor circulation and is just
plain cold?
Twenty-two years agp I
suffered a heart attack. JBince
that time I have slept in flannel
pajamas, a wool sweater and
socks. I use an electric blanket
all year around. My wife has
never made fun of me.
I hope the complaining wench
will read this letter and ask
herself the question you have
urged on so many wives before
considering separation or
divorce. It is this:
“Would your life be better
with him or without him?” —
No Last Name Please, Just Jim
Dear Jim: Since the ltter
from that wench appeared, I
have received the doggonedest
descriptions of weird sleeping
apparel. For example: A man
in Miami says his wife sleeps in
a fur coat, summer and winter,
ever since they moved from
Minnesota. A woman in Wor-
cester, Mass., says her bald-
headed husband sleeps in one of
her old turbans from October
through May. A mother 'in
Kansas wrote that her son was
so thrilled when he made the
team he slept in his football
helmet for three weeks! The
things I learn from my
readers!
Dear Ann Landers: I am in a
state of depression. Here is
why: My husband's cousin who
owns a large ranch in Australia
has asked him to become his
business partner to replace the
partner who died suddenly.
Karl is knowledgeable about
animals and has a good head on
his shoulders. We talked about
the offer for a few days and told
Karl I just couldn’t bear to
leave our home and go live in a
strange land on the other side of
the world.
Yesterday at dinner Karl
dropped the bomb. He has
signed the contract, given
notice at his place of em-
ployment and we are to be in
Australia within a month.
Karl is excited about a new
life away from the rat race SI
say I won’t go, there will be no
support money because a
woman who refuses to live with
her husband is not entitled to
anything.
We have had « good marriage
until now. Our children are
grown, and 1 am crazy about
the grandchildren. I dread the
thought a leaving them — not
to mention my family and
friends and everytlxng I hold
dear.
It seems like a bad dream,
and it is tearing me apart. Can
you say something to help me
stop crying? — Wet Han-
dkerchiefs In Indianapolis
Dear Wet: Turn off the
waterworks, woman. You are
wasting the natural resources.
Make up your mind you're
going to be equal to the
challenge and enjoy the ad-
veuture. There’s a lot to he said
for life ‘down under.” and you
may love tL
I agree that it was pretty
tacky of your husband to make
the decision on his own, but he
has done it — and a refusal to
go would probably mean the
end of your marriage. So, when
life hands you a lemon, make
lemonade You may find it
refreshing.
